Carb cleaning and setup (dellorto dhla40g)
Ive just (wednesday) bought a westfeild with a 1.9 CVH on twin dellortos.
I went out for a bit of a spin after work thursday, and then on friday drove down to loughborough with a freind.
- Other than the fact i stalled it on a major roundabout, in the pouring, and then found the startermotor solenoid had come undone and had to get her
to bump it to get the last 10miles.
However when i then came to move it from someones house to a carpark an hour later although it started fine (when pushed) but after about 400yrds it
spluttered and stopped.
- I could start it, and keep it going with acellerator bottomed. But it clearly wasnt at all right and the following morning it was the same so after
some musing i called the breakdown! (it was still pouring, and i had no tools).
Bloke (who races motorbikes) but it down to a fuel/carb issue. And i got relayed home. First time the parents saw the car, on the back of a demount
van.
So yeah. I think the carbs wanted cleaning and setting up anyway. So it seams i better do that.
Only snag being that the only work ive done on carbs has been outboards and gennys! And on a 'needs must' 'get it going'
agenda at that.
Ive got a exploded diagram, but does anyone have any further info on where to start with taking them to bits, anyone i might talk to or take them too?
And proberbly for future, somewhere with a road who deals with Dellortos.

As it was fine, the jetting should be correct, or at least OK. The sudden problem could be something blocked, but I would also check all the ignition
system too, it may have got wet?? I know its obvious, but don't overlook it.
Regarding jets and stuff, take them out and blow them through. Aerosol carb cleaner is good stuff but nasty to humans.
DO use the correct size screwdrivers, and do not force anything, the screws are easily damaged. If in doubt and a screw is still, I tap the end of the
screwdriver a few times with a light hammer, it is usually enough to get things moving. Beware pump jets, they must be put back in the correct
orientation otherwise they can jam. It they do not go in easy try again.
The other thing is airleaks, worth checking the carb to manifold seals.
And finally balance is king with these carbs. Get a proper balancer like the morgan carbtune, makes the job quick and very simple and nothing else is
as accurate.

Ive just cleaned / stripped / rebuilt a pair of 45s. Youll need the service kit which is £60 ish quid for not a lot. Do the carbs one at a time so
you can refer back to the complete one to see how it goes together. Take them apart (although leave the spindles and trottle butterflies on) and
clean everything with carb cleaner a blow through with compressed air. Make a note of all the jet / tube etc markings also of how far the idle valve
is currently turned out

Bike carbs are the answer, cheaper, simpler better and easier to set up than the side draught type.

OK cheers guys.
I away sadly for the next week or so, but m emial address is daniel+a-t+spurstow dot com clive. A manual or them would be a god sent right now.
Ive got a large icecream box full of bits with it, so i'll have a look exactly what i have there in terms of gasgets and then proberbly get a
kit bought.
I did consider ignition, but it all looks dry enough, and when it does run it runs smoothly enough, starts as well as you could expect and from a slow
turn over. Just no power and doesnt tick over.
Baptisum of fire as expected! But there we go. Looking fwd to the journey!

Got a gasget kit and have one of the carbs off and coming down to bits.
Hopfully it will look a mess inside, and i'll clean it, and all will be good! Watch this space.
Only just PMed Clive a bit ago, but hopfully that will come good for a manual. We'll see!

Got them apart, cleaned through, and back together
All was very clean inside, and although they now seam to work as they did before, that seams not to have cured the problem. Arse
Currently plan now its its a timing/ignition issue.
- Spark/plugs seam fine, if a little sooty/blackened.
Timing belt seams loose than i would expect, or atlease, looser than i would go on as new and i dont thing they should streach much with age?
- However the top pulley (camshaft) doesnt seam to have any timing marks on it so im stuggling to check if it might have jumped at all. :S
No idea how to check ingnition timing. Mark lining up with the non-existant timing marks on the top pulley.
Im leanring fast, but wanting to work faster than that!
