Inclining a zetec engine
Hi
I'm making a 'mid engined' car by moving a mondeo engine (zetec) and box to the back. I plan to incline the engine about 20 degrees
to the front (exhaust) side so that the drive shafts are horizontal (least power loss) and also to shift the cog of the car shightly forwards.
Does anyone know of any problems I may get? I will baffle the sump to stop the oil going up the bores under braking. Will the PCV still work? Will the
injection and exhaust still work at this sort of angle?
The gearbox will also be inclined - will this give any problems? Its a cable change so the gearchange should't be too difficult to plumb in.
Also, the engine number is unreadable - can I just re-stamp it?? If so what size should the numbers be, and which way up?
Thanks for any help you can give

20 degrees sounds a LOT! the gains surely outweigh the cost.
i imagine you'll be looking at custom sump, oil pickup, and maybe looking into the efficiency of oil drains in the block if nothing else.
then there's the gearbox to contend with, shifting the oil bath pretty significantly.
let us know how it goes if you do it!

I went the other way with my Volumex engine i.e. was inclined at 22 degrees, now vertical. Some items to consider - oil galleries in cam boxes - will
they flood/ starve? Oil pump - will it pick up OK, ideally pick-up should be horizontal? Gearbox again will the oil level cause problems by now being
too high one side/too low the other- probably not but worth considering an adaptor plate to avoid any problems.
Exhaust ports shouldn't be a problem- inlet ports might be but I can't answer that one as mine runs a carb (albeit the inlet tract points
up-hill but I reckon the extra suck from the s/charger should negate that).
Engine number could be tricky as VOSA have manuals for each engine type which they refer to when deciding on for emission levels
Cheers, Pewe

Onyx incline the K series in their Mongoose (closer to 45degrees).
Some information on the problems they faced (much the same as ^^^) on this page.

Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

Thanks for the input. I saw the onyx at cadwell a couple of years ago and was very impressed with it. know they had a lot of problems with oil surge
going up the bores of the engine. They are quite near me in Grimsby so may have a rip over one lunch time for a chat.
I will certainly have a look at/think about oil circulaion to cams and decide what I can do about that. Interestingly the zetec sump is sloped so that
if you stand the engine on the sump the cylinders are inclinded 12 degrees in the right direction! I don't know what tha signifies though.
I a still inerested in the legality of re-stamping the engine number. I know the previous owner of my donor, who had it from 3 years old and says the
engine(as far as he is aware) is the original.
Keep the ideas coming and thanks to iank, pewe and indykid for their input!
