prop shaft and a type 9
Hi all,
I hope someone can help me out here as I am a bit stuck. I have a sierra diff and a type 9 box and am looking to get a prop shaft made up however I
do not know how to calculate the full length of the prop. I have measured the distance from the front of the diff flange to the face at the rear of
the box (69cm by the way!) however I dont know anything about how long the splined section needs to be and thus how far into the box it needs to go.
Can anyone help me?
Also does the end of the prop at the gearbox end fit over a splined shaft or into a splined shaft? I thought it was a splined shaft going into a
splined hole in the box however mine seems to have a splined shaft sticking slightly out of the box.
Help!!!

Seconded for bailey morris. I emailed them the exact sizes as you have i.e. flange to rear of gearbox oil seal and they did the rest.
If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.

Bailey Morris 
The gearbox has a splined shaft (male) sticking slightly out and the propshaft will have a tube end ( female )with internal splines.

Cheers guys. Are these bailey morris folk 'good value'? I am assuming being recommended on this site they aint rip off merchants. What
sort of money are we talking about?

No not rip offs at all ordered and deliverd within 10 working days for me. Price around £150 ish IIRC this year.
If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.

Bailey Morris are good.
I used IMS in Birmingham (college road - just off M6) and they were superb.
Id also say try Dunning and Fairbank in Leeds.
All will advise what dimensions they need and look after you.
As said already the diff flange is a set datum. Ref gearbox there is a male splined shaft. Just inside the casing (this end is called the nose) there
is a seal. Its worth replacing this. The female splined prop shaft slides over the male gearbox end and goes inside the gearbox to seal up. The
splines allow you to slide the prop on and then pull back to bolt up to the diff. The prop guys will know what minimum length is required inside the
'box.
