Very true, but they do the job pretty well, i,m not suggesting car engines in a 7 dont work, the boiling steaming ones i was refering too tend to be
under the bonnet of a tin top,

CAR ENGINE
OK, Can I ask my question again please?
2.0 or 2.0i pinto vs 1.6i Zetec SE / 1.8i/2.0i Zetec
on a power / hassle / kg / £ basis which engines are more trouble / kg / £ than they are worth and which are better than a layman might expect.
I want a straight from the dismantlers build adding the fewest "other" parts. That is I dont want to add webbers / after market ECUs /
throttle bodys. I also dont want unexpected troubles such as immobiliser functions spread over half a doxen other ECUs.

where you at with your build ?
cheapest option is find a cortina with a 2ltr pinto in it, you then have all the runing gear you need and everything req'd to run it.....
or if its a sierra based kit your building same again but replace the word cortina for sirrea.
When i built my 1st one i paid £50 for a cortina, around £40 for the chassis steel, with the other bits n bobs it was on the road for well under
£1k.
If its just a cheap simple tunable engine your after i would go pinto, there 10 a penny, plenty of tuning bits around at the right price for a tuning
winter project and you can go as far as fitting a cosworth head if the mood takes you.

In general older car engines are the easiest to fit --- because they don't have complicated electronics.

Don't discount the good old crossflow!!
There's still plenty about (at least 6 on ebay now!)
They're light(ish), simple to work on, respond very well to basic tuning, smaller than a pinto and sound much better (something to do with the
no standard firing order?).
