CELICA GT ENGINE

Anyone able to tell me how similar a 1987 2.0L Celica GT engine is to a 4-AGE? Is it a "do-able" option for a Locost?

Many thanks, Ian.

Similiar in that it's a 16v twin cam, but otherwise it's a different engine series 3S-FE I think.....pretty sure it's FWD too so you would need a different box anyway....

Bottom line, IMO, very do-able but you may have to dig more for info and parts.

Thanks for the input Alan. Apparently it's a little heavier and larger than the 4-AGE, But has more power. Not as easy as the 4-AGE to convert to rear wheel drive according to one site I was looking at. Decided that I'm losing sight of the prize, so think I'll make do with the pinto until I get it SVA'd etc!

has the same block as the 3sge and the 3sgte (turbo) from the mr2. If alan was right that the celica engine is the 3sfe then only the heads are different. I bought my 4age and t50 from a guy who was putting a 3sge into his RWD corolla, he was planning to use a supra gearbox, dont know how well it fits, ill give him a call soon and find out.

Hi Findlay,

I'm sure this is a 3SGE. It's definately not an FE. I'm getting the car and removing the engine for "later" anyway!! Be grateful for any info that you can come up with.

Regards, Ian.

It will be a 3S-GE. The 3S-FE came out later - about '96 I think. I don't know for sure but would be almost certain it will fit a Supra box.

Been there!

Ho biy are you in for some fun

Right, here are some bits of information I clipped when I was looking to do the same setup for one of my cars. I got the hump trying to work out what half the cars the engines should have been fitted in, then trying to find a scrapyard that actually had the bits, without resorting to Japan...

Here

And

Here

The second link seems to be a bit clearer, the first, well, shall we say, I got the information from some wideboy American type...

I shelved plans to do it in the end. Went the Rover turbo route. More satisfying that way. Especially as I already had a tweaked engine and the RWD box :-)
