Exhaust wrap - silly question
I've just wrapped my exhaust headers prior to lining the engine bay with sound insulation in a bid to get my noise level down from the 106.9dB I
managed at the last SVA.
I fired up the engine and was suprised to see that the exhaust wrap started smoking. I'm guessing that this is just some manufacturing
residue that burns off the first time that the wrap gets up to heat, but would be grateful if someone could confirm.
The wrap is standard 50mm white glass wrap from Merlin - yes I am very itchy after installing it

Stinks as well doesn't it? It will stop smoking and smelling after a few miles

How neat did you get it ? I am told its a sod.
Got mine to do in a week or so.

soak it in water first,makes it a lot easier to fit

I found it quite easy to get neat. Smells of cooking biscuits / pop corn for a little while. Not nasty in my experience though it might depend on
which make it is!!!

Quite normal! The self-adhesive stuff smells rank. I stunk out Chadderton VOSA centre!

It was reasonably easy to get neat. Wish I had known about soaking it first though - I didn't wear gloves as I find it hard to do things
requiring a reasonably amount of dexterity in them, and I'm now itching like a bastard - it's far worse than exhaust packing.

The smoking scared the life out of me! I was 1 mile up the road to an MOT - the first proper run in the car - when smoke started coming out from
under the bonnet. Stopped, took off the bonnet, and saw that it was the wrap!

So does anyone know hos I stop this DAMN ITCHING?????
Seriously, I've never had glassfibre itching this bad - its driving me nuts. I'm trying to cook Easter dinner (duck - yum) and keep
having to run my hand under cold water to try and relieve the itching.

In the past I've nicked some of my wife's hand cream to get rid of the itch - just don't go to the pub straight after, or its
perfume will attract all the wrong sort (or not - depends on your preferences...  )

Duck..I'm inviting myself over to dinner! 
Take a long shower with plenty of soap, itching should go.......
If its broke, fix it. If it aint broke, take it apart and find out how it works!

The exhaust noise is measured from the exit pipe end and any noise from the headers will not contibute to the measured noise, wrapping the headers
will make little difference to you very load exhaust. You are not even close at 107db and need to either repack the exhaust, but with 6 db points to
drop that is a big order of fit a can that is much more up to the job. I welded in a db reducer that dropped me to 96 db, my fulling was alover the
place but passed the noise test.

I've repacked the exhaust, added a decibel reducer, added deadening pads to the cockpit panels and I'm in the process of adding 20mm sound
insulation to the engine compartment.
The exhaust wrap is to protect the sound insulation in the engine compartment from heat as I said in the OP.

Bit late know but wash your hands in cold water that way the pours in the skin dont open and it stops the fiber glass going in further
