BEC engine set up

Failed SVA on emissions yesterday. Its a ZZR1200, with Micron can.

figures weren't too far off the targets, but I have no way of testing or fettling it myself.

Obviously it needs some 'setting up', but I'm not sure how much work this might actually entail, and who can do it?

Would a normal MOT station be able to do this on their gas analyser? Or would the bike engine make it too specialist?

normal mot places can do bike mots i think, so they should be able to adjust them i'd think

No such thing as a pre-95 ZZR12 (unless I'm missing something).

I would suggest the OP call his local Kwak dealer and see if they can help. I doubt a car garage will touch it.

But really, OP wants a dyno center. Try the dynojet website, which has a directory of UK dynos. Any dyno center should be able to do a custom map that will get you through SVA.

FBM Motorsport sounds like an idea. Good excuse for a run down to Jedburgh with a stop at Hawick to see the Jimmy Guthrie and Steve Hislop collections at the museum (what's even more scary than a ZZR12 BEC? Jimmy's old race bikes...)

Engine is a 2004 model.

I think you have summed up the problem - car garages wont have a clue what it is, and bike garages dont have facilites for the car......

Would a car Dyno centre know enough about bike carbs?

Suggestions for anywhere in the west coast/Glasgow area appreciated.

I set up my carbed R1 emissions at a local HiQ place. Their machine measures CO2 and HC to the required limits. I adjusted the mixture screws until it was right. I believe it only has to be right at 2500 RPM.

I don't know how you adjust a ZX12 but would think a power commander is the tool for the job. Some bikes allow you to tweak things a bit using the clocks. Perhaps the Kawasaki is the same.

Edit to say that they didn't even charge me because I didn't take up any of their time!

I would have thought a car dyno center that's not fly-by-night will have seen a few BECs in their time. There are of course properly equipped places (PDQ being one example, if you don't mind a bit of a trip!), but AFAIK not around Glasgow. It's the price you pay for having the Trossachs on your doorstep rather than Reading or Slough.

I would have thought that, even if they can't put the car on their dyno, an experienced bike dyno operator should be able to do the setup on a no-load basis, assuming the mixture sensor can be got to the tailpipe. I imagine you would have to check and see that it still fuelled acceptably under load though, so as not to arouse the suspicions of the SVA tester. Specials of Glasgow used to be the place to go for bike dyno work, but I gather they are no longer in existence.

Seeing smart51's post, you may be able to get it sufficiently clean at your local MOT station or garage just by tweaking the mixture screw/s. Kwikfit may not touch it, but I bet if you find a "tuner" garage that does MOTs, they will be happy to help. It may or may not work without changing the appropriate jets.

There's a bloke in Cambuslang with a bike background who also has a Dyno.

No recommendation or anything as I have no axe to ground, but try Mel Robinson at Robinson Tuning.

He can combine both abilities.

if its a zzr1200 its carbed and has keihin (sp) carbs edit to say just take the car to a local bike tuner and he will put the sniffer up her (oh err) and make the adjustments
