Sunday's jolly good idea type thing
ok, peeps, what do think of this?
see below - cardboard template to be made from 12 mm alloy or 10 mm mild steel, countersunk bolts to hold adapter to cylinder head.
Will allow thermostat outlet to be set at a different angle in order to use 90 degree hose.
Jolly good or wee poor idea? Done before?

what engine is it for?
would it be a case of bolting the bottom plate to the block with a gasket and then bolting the thermastat housing to the top plate with another
gasket?

yes. two gaskets.
I suppose it would be possible to cut off the original thermostat base and lumiweld it back on or a new base but I am not sure how easy/sucessful it
would be.
this method assumes that countersunk unf bolts are readily available - I could tap the head for metric maybe.

You dont need countersunk bolts...
I would be inclined to make the adapter out of thick alloy plate and simply recess some button cap head screws in there.... Allows you to use a small
washer and more scope for doing it up tight!
Really cunning idea!

Could be done, but not sure why it's relevant to your '$ 12 trillion solution for the global economic catastrophe'
I can't remember what your car/engine/rad combination is - can you remind me/us - ah, just seen xflow
However, in my case of MK/Pinto/Polo I've used a 32mm ID convoluted top hose from CBS and it fits with the 'stat housing in standard
orientation.
I try to 'keep it simple'

I cut mine and had is welded, was strong enough but it's JB weld rather than the mig that keeps the coolant in..
Design looks fair, would probably make out of something thinner (5mm mild prob) to avoid it sticking out fouling something else and would drill and
tap the holes for the new thermostat to avoid faffing about with nuts on the back....
Just my thoughts...

I am not a fan of convoluted hose and prefer not to make it up using lots of separate hoses and joiners.
If I flip the 'stat around, my calculations indicate that I can use one 90 degree 150 mm leg piece.
The piece I am replacing is top left corner.
Also I am replacing the 'stat with fiesta which has the pressure cap - the adapter will also raise the water level which hopefully will be higher
than the radiator.

I like it. I'm not sure it is the most economic solution, but that would depend on machining costs and quantities, so it might well be.

Machine costs? A little pillar drill and you could chain drill that out in 20 mins, 5 mins with a file and fitted before mid day
If you can keep you head, whilst all others around you are losing theirs, you are not fully aware of the situation

woo hoo - just checked - rocker cover not a problem so the search is on for a 70 x 80 mm piece of metal.
alloy would be easier to machine by the method stated above but I need to work out how thick it has to be forthere be enough threads for the bolts to
hold the 'stat down.
one cylinder head bolt becomes accessible - I already checked there is clearance - so the retorque cannot be done uless the 'stat and adapter
are removed.
the extra gasket again is not ideal but shouldn;t present problems.

Might be worth looking at a Fiesta t/stat housing as the out let is at a different angle?

Just had a thought - could you turn the outlet to the attitude you want and make a strap to go over it and secure with longer bolts into the standard
screw holes? Probably not as pretty, but only one joint.

Have you actually bought one yet? I have a new one I've just taken of my Striker as it's too tall and hits the bonnet.

Im making my water pipes at the moment, and have a Fiesta Stat Cover, and the outlet is pointing towards rad and not towards gearbox, like on the
Escort.
With that i just brought a straight length of 32mm, and it goes on a treat, has a slight curve.

yep, already have fiesta 'stat.
the radiator is too close for straight tubing to connect without kinking, hence the need for 90 degree bend.
got some UNC cap heads, heads are 7.5 mm tall so if I can source 12 mm plate, that would leave 4.5 mm to clamp down, hmmmmmm (unless I thin the head
down a bit).
