Looking promising...!
L&G,
The 'new-to-me' engine is in the car all connected up, twin SUs in place of the original nasty carb.
Filled with oil and established oil pressure then did a compression test (before the manifolds went on) and all cylinders were in the 160 to 170
range.
Fired up first time!
I left it idling for about 15 minutes and the temp gauge reached half scale.
One noticeable difference from the old engine - there's now a steady stream of water coming into the header tank from the rad+'stat bleeds.
Previously when it got hot and the header filled up, there was a stream of bubbles.
There's still a few mods to do, mainly the throttle linkage needs a bit of adjustment as the cable is a bit tight for length and a different
bracket for the header tank.
But apart from that it's looking a lot more promising than the old one.

Alex,
Haven't taken it out since, but it was fine when I rebuilt the front end of the old engine - it only did about 50 miles since then.
The 'new' engine looked to have a newer pump so I used that; I removed it, checked it and refitted with a new gasket.
John.
