Bellhousing Spacer
I've stripped off the bell housing from my Pinto and having removed the spacer that goes between the bellhousing and the block I've found it's not
a complete circle.
I'm wondering if it's meant to be this way. The 'split' is at a point next to where the starter motor fits at a point of the spacer where the
metal is about 15mm wide.
The weird thing is the 'faces' of the split don't quite match up as if they're meant to be this way.
Do I need a new one?

No worries!
I think the split is there to allow you to get the 'spacer' off without removing the flywheel.
BTW: it isn't a spacer, it's a cover to stop muck & water getting scooped up onto the clutch. The split bit isn't in a critical area - the
important bit is at the bottom of the bellhousing, below the block.
This has been discussed before, where type 9 boxes are fitted to Xflow blocks. The type 9 cover doesn't fit, but can be made to do so by the use of
a saw or file. You can run without it - but it seems sensible to fit it, if you can.

if you remove the plate it can on some cars take the free play away from the realse bearin wearin it out or the fingers on the pressure plate or move
the starter too close too the fly wheel which can wear the teeth on both makin the starter a bit noisy.
