quaife gearsets in a type9
has anyone here ran or heard anything about running a quaife gearset in a type 9? looking for any opinions on any of the stages they offer. I am a
little interested in a dog/stright cut gear conversion.reason I ask is that I am still pondering a motor for my locost and if I go with what I have
(2.3L turbo motor) it will be putting out close to 300 hp and 400 ft-lbs and am afraid of wheel spin taking out the box.

With that kind of power you really want a T5,
however if a 4 speed would do the job look at the 2 litre Capri german external rod change box --- heavy but very very tough, was used on works RWD
Rally Escorts.

Trident,
Capri boxes- would there be many of them in Illinois?
Nick,
What's the story with the original gearbox from that car? They weren't FWD were they?
I don't know much about the quaife gearsets- except they're bloody expensive!
Good Luck,
James

the quaife pro type 9 kit is rated to 280bhp i believe, the clubman kit to 190bhp. tran-x do a kit (better value) thats supposed to take 250bhp.
anything above that is def. t5 territory.
Ned.

My experience is that peak torque is more critical than peak power for these things. Sounds as though the motor is out of a mid 80s mustang or
similar??? Am I even close? If so wouldn't something like the tremec box that was used suit? Why so keen for straight cut gears? You planning on
racing or just like the noise!! ;-)

motor is out of a merkur xr4ti as is box.
I also have a 1984 mustang german 4 speed (internal rail ford)
I have noted a huge weight difference between the 4 and 5 speed and the t5 tranny is much heavier and I fell over kill (not to mention larger) also
the US t5's have been mostly beat on hard and aren't good for performance driving...I mean they are a good box but need mods too to shift
smoothly.
another thing I am looking for a is better ratio choices and a fast shifting box.
btw the US 2.3L is based off the pinto...same bell just the rest is scaled up (uses same distributer) I have been thinking of a zetec swap since the
2.3L weighs as much as a alloy head/iron block V8

Zetec might be a decent bet. Its pretty tunable - 2.0 Zetec was teh base for the escort cosworth so 240bhp before other mods, chipping etc. MT75 box
may well bolt up if you can get them over there (I know you take the MTX in the Focus manual but thats FWD).
The Merkur is basically the Ford Sierra over here - but our XR derivative was a 2.8 / 2.9 depending on year. Both took the MT trans I think. Point is
that there should be plenty of quaife parts for sale. Could start by looking at www.buton-power.co.uk but be aware that these guys are not cheap,
gives you some clue about what is available though.
BTW, just tried the link and it seems to be down at the mo.
Even better bet on engine front might be the new 2.3 that is just going into the Focus now (over there, not here sadly). It has a very beefy bottom
end - a friend has a 2.0 rallycross car with this same base engine putting out 275bhp with no change in crank....

I am pretty sure we don't have the mt75 over here....if we do it is in a truck.
no the xr's here had 2.3L only with either a c3 auto or a t9 manual. we also had the sorpio's with 2.9L's in them (2.9's were
also used in the small truck here)
is there a way to bolt a zetec to a t9?

Dont know - I can find out as I have a type 9 box lying around and I'm sure I can find out the hole centres for the zetec. Will be after the
weekend though now, as I can get the info from work.
Probably all that is on a website somewhere too. Has your T9 got a removable bell housing, or is it all part of the trans case casting?
