is there a type 9 expert in the house?
Greetings from Michigan USA!
I have a ruined Type 9 gearbox that I’m attempting to take to bits.
In the states, the type 9 gearbox is obsolete and was only offered on the US version of the Sierra. No manuals are offered on repairing the gearbox,
so I’ll experiment on the ruined one.
I cannot figure out how to remove the fist motion shaft, I have cannot seem to get any of the gearbox bits to come out of the case. I pulled all
the snap rings and drift pins, yet I still am unable to disassemble the box any further. What am I missing?
Any experts willing to offer advice?
Thanks
Jim

you have to take lay shaft out, drop the lay gear, remove the 3rd motion bearing then pull mainshaft out through top of the box,ist motion shaft goes
inwards then lift lay gear out.hth

When I have taken this type of box apart before ( 4 speed only )to repair trashed gears through racing I have got hold of a piece of bar the same as
the layshaft diameter ( or slightly smaller ), that you an see from either end on the gearbox main casing, but only as long as the inside edges of
the main casing. You then have to drive this rearward from the front of the gearbox after making sure there is sufficient room for it to come out

Drive your dummy shaft all the way in so that it clears the inside edge of both ends of the box, then the layshaft should be able to be pulled from
back end out. This allows the layshaft gear and all the roller bearings to stay complete and when you put the box right way up if not already it falls
to bottom of box and allows the mainshaft to now be pulled out. That how I do it on a 4 speed. reassemble is reverse, hope this helps, could trying
scanning l a copy of a haynes manual for you ?

Arrrrrg!,
I'm still having difficulties in getting the gearbox apart.
Its quite the puzzle, I'm stumped!
Would it be possible to get a scan of the manual?
I can translate most of the "English" words from the posts, however a picture would help reference the parts.
I use my Haynes Triumph Spitfire manual to figure out the difference in component names.
My attempt at dismantling this gearbox has me very frustrated. I have above normal mechanical abilities and I feel this should not be too
difficult.
I’m about to use a BFH on the gearbox.
Cheers!

I have all the pages on dismantling the box. Do you want me to email a copy?

Greetings!,
Somehow I managed to get the gearbox apart. Thanks to all who offered help!, and especially thanks for the scans!
Also..
…thanks to this site, I discovered the Megasquirt FI system. I just ordered the kits. I’ll be building a FI system for the Spitfire.
Cheers!
