Sierra diff cover seal

Hi, I took the diff cover off my Sierra diff the other day to see how much I could machine off the rear support nose without making a hole in it. I was surprised to find no gasket or obvious sealant on the mating faces. What is the accepted method of rejointing this, a smear of Hylomar or similar be OK? Thanks, Steve.

I've used both "golden" instant gasket or quality clear silicone sealant. These are both oil resistant and heat proof to sufficient temperatures for a diff.

Clear silicone is far preferable to anything with colour as it is significantly more heat proof.
