A voice in the back of my head tells me the song is 'Turning Japanese' but I can't remember who sang it. One of the lesser punk
bands maybe?

correct, it is Turning Japanese by the Vapors.
they had an LP record if memory serves me well called New Clear Days. (nbuclear - geddit?)
... and the next line, if memory serves me is
everyone around me is a total stranger
everyone around me is a cyclo? ranger.

I'm surprised we haven't got onto the long running debate about what Turning Japanses refers to. And whether its true or not.
I like the line 'I wanna doctor, to take your picture, so I can look at you from inside aswell'. Kind of pervy
