downdraft carb

im sure i recall reading either on here or somewhere else about fitting an aluminium spacer block inside the air box above the carb. In my case on a 1300gt xflow engine. The face curves gradually down to the carb opening in a sinilar way i presume to a trumpet, to improve airflow thus improving power.
Can any one shed any light on this? or is it an old wives/boy racers tale, or even something ive simply imagined!

Not an old wives tale at all - my 1st Sylva was an ex racer which was only allowed one carb as per original. This had just what you talk about. A block of ally mounted on top of the carb which was blended into a more airflow friendly shape at the inlet. It was about 3/4" thick if I remember correctly.

cheers for confirming that.
was it a spacer between carb and airbox/filter, or inside the airbox/filter?
