Zetec lrs707 starter fouls sump?

My sump is a chopped and shortned mondeo sump, the rib on the side of the sump will not allow the starter to go in, my brother who also had the same issue shaved sum off the sump but ended up haveing to get it welded as the metal went through. has anybody else had this issue?
is it possible to use the zetec starter with some plate so it bolts up with 2 bolts as it is smaller?

Not sure if this is a silvertop you're referring to - I've fitted two blacktops in RWD configuration. The sump side ribs will need grinding to fit the starter. I carefully ground mine down - it's the ribs only not the actual sump material. I've had no problems...

This is normal. When the sump is fitted to the engine it is possible to move it to one side slightly, this way you don't need to grind too much off it.

This is how I did my silvertop sump, its on a blacktop, but things are in the same place:

Phase 2 sump on phase 3
Phase 2 sump on phase 3

hi, I had the same problem, simply grind web on sump until fits. Some starters are slightly different in size .I used one from cvh 1.8 sierra. Hope this helps.

cut a section out of my sump and had a plate welded inside to create a recess

Hi Dunk3. I'm just doing a change from a 1.8 silvertop to a 2.0 black top. The alloy sump on the silvertop was no problem at all but the blacktop one looks like it's going to need alot taken off to clear the starter. Did you have this problem, or maybe you have a smaller starter (which one)?

I could use the sivertop sump i suppose but I like the two piece blacktop one as it's easy to get a shallow bottom pan. It was a long time ago but I think my starter was from a 1.8 CVH sierra

Hi, i used the same starter 1.8 CVH sierra, i ground the side of the sump of with a grinder, took about an hour to do, i had the engine on a engine stand which made it easy to get to.

I have a DOHC starter and no mods required for the silvertop sump, fitted without any probs.

As above had to grind off the ribs on the blacktop but not too much.

Dunk3 could you show a pic of what you did for the starter there or confirm if your pic shows the finished sump?

Coozer, could you confirm if your black top is 2.0 or 1.8 and which flywheel/bellhousing?
By the looks of it you haven't had to grind at the alloy to steel sump joint point at all. The problem point I have is there, almost directly below the alloy X shaped webbing in the middle of your pic.
I do notice you have a weld in your steel pan though - what's that about?
Could you do a pic of your DOHC starter?

I found these first two pics of a Sierra twincam (4*4) starter on ebay.
The second Three pics are of my starter that does not fit and of what I did to my sump so far.
I notices that the partnumber between thew 1.8CVH and the twincam are both G4X2A but the type is different - mine is M79(0.9) but the other is M78R(1.4). There also appear to be some other visible differences such as where the wire comes out of the main body. What is yours like? Rescued attachment sierratwinkstarter.jpg

The twincam 4x4 starter in your first 2 pic's from ebay is mine.
Beware,it is different from a 2 wheel drive starter.
This fits fine on my 2.0 silvertop with 1.8 flywheel,though does not turn the engine.
The throw is to short to engage the ring gear.

Found a new smaller starter as equivalent to LRS707

Very Skinny and it fits without sump mods
You can see from the CVH starter next to it!

Word of warning - not tested yet but the gears are definitely the same size/ throw looks the same etc so it should be good Rescued attachment starter.jpg

I know this is an old thread... his googleness brought me here! Just wondering, how did you get on with that wood auto starter spegru? And has anyone else tried it?

I quite like the idea of not having to hack at the sump!

I ordered one from Woodauto about 6 months back and when it came it was exactly the same size as the standard Sierra unit, so I pressume it depends what make of starter they have in at the time.
I rang them after I received it to see if they were able to check their stock and locate a smaller bodied one but they were less than helpful and I ended up returning it to them for a refund.

Chop the sump, its not that bad once you get started!!
