Air Filter Clearance - home made filters?

I only have a gap of approximately 15mm between the end of one of my trumpets to the chassis. I've got Webber 45s, a shortened manifold and very small trumpets. Two trumpets have a shortened ITG sock filter fitted, but fitting the ITG to trumpet 1 means it is squashed between the chassis and the end of the trumpet with no gap. The engine has trouble breathing and won't run properly.

I have to have a good filter as it is used in dusty areas. Does anyone have any ideas for filters or what material I can use. Any diagrams of home made filters used in small spaces would be most appreciated.

Unfortunately angled inlet manifolds are not an option.

Have you considered making an air box and having a remote filter? This is what I am doing. You could have the inlet at the front of the car drawing cold air. Glan.
