Type 9 shortshift

The joys of building a part-built kit have always thrown mystery on a lot of things, but this is the latest issue I've come across....

I've got (which was already fitted when I got the car) a gear lever extension kit which pushes the lever itself back 6-odd inches along the center tunnel. But as per usual, I wanted to fit the short shift kit that i found in one of the boxes.

I took the standard gear lever off, no problems there. But looking at the contents/mechanism of the suggested replacement, I'm a tad confused. Do I need to re-use part of the original unit, or am I missing a part?

Somewhat confused as to how it all works now! Rescued attachment 36032_405648688940_507698940_4348965_7910899_n.jpg

This is the original unit, but obviously looks a lot more intact and together! Have I inherited another collection of useless parts? Rescued attachment 37307_405648708940_507698940_4348966_6797657_n.jpg

I've still got one in a bag somewhere - never fitted it.

The quickshift works by moving the fulcrum upwards and adding a spacing plate beneath.

I guess you've got a replacement gear lever shaft with a higher fulcrum plus a plate to space it higher. The remaining pieces are scavenged from the original lever (I think)

You appear to be missing a part - the new gear lever should have a machined aluminium plate that the rose joint bush is pressed into. This allows it to be bolted to the top of the gearbox.

Like this one...

the kit I had contained the parts shown minus modified gear levers.

The aluminium spacer goes under the original gear lever. The plastic u clip thing was instered around the original lower part of the lever to move the pivot point of the lever. It involved removing a circlip and then in a vice tapping the lever through it's pivot surround then inserting the white plactic clip and then reassembling.

I bought mine from rally design

2 part numbers available RD1742 which has a replacement gear lever and RD1772 which is road use and reuses original modified unit.

Email Rally design and tell them you've lost the instructions they may provide a scan of the single sheet that comes with it.
