I've never had any problems getting them out, they should lift out easily. Sounds like they a pretty badly gummed up? in which case try cleaning them with a little thinners. It may be possible to use a small slide hammer to get them out?

the ones on a rover V8 tend to mushroom at the cam end so have to be droped out. They will not lift out. - not the same engine but a possibility.

Might be worth soaking them in releasing fluid (but not too much!) and maybe trying something like one of those small cavity wall fixings (the toggle kind), that might give you enough pull against the sides. Probably talking 'ollox, but might work.

Like this:

Not sure if I'm making sense? (no change there then )

Usually they'll move a little bit. In which case put some easing oil (PlusGas/DuckOil) around them, particularly the little bleed hole next to them. Grip the top and pull/push in and out untill they eventually come out.

Never had one that wouldn't move at all.

Heat up the inside of the lifters slowly either with a hot air gun or a blow torch.
When they have cooled down you should be able to move them. Usually its the oil sludge that is the problem. Dont go to wild, gently does it.

Perhapd you could poor some cold water inside the lifter when it is warm, this way the lifter will shrink and the head will still be expanded?

two reasons -either oil/gunge/hydrauluc action is preventing them or wear so they are to big to pass trough the hole as ^^^^ said above re: v8.

I would suggest removing the cam and let them drop out but not familiar with your engine.
