Vauxhall XE on standard fuel system?

Hi, I was just looking into engines and am quite tempted by the Vauxhall XE, can anyone tell me what modifications need to be made to make it fit in an Indy? Would I need to run it on carbs or will the standard system fit? Anything else i should be aware of?

Thanks

Pete

I am about to do the same in a Luego.

I am fitting carbs, which means you can bin all the EFI and ECU bits. You need a 8v Cavalier distributor and coil and thats it.

You also need;

bellhousing adapter (£120)
sierra clutch fork
sierra clutch plate (friction plate) use vx pressure plate
spiggot bearing
inlet manifold
chopped baffled sump or new shallow sump (£150)

Have a look in the Luego section as there are a few guys who have already done it!

Hope this helps.

Oh yes, I am getting a XE with weber 45's for £600, should give 180BHP minimum!!!

Cheers Ben

Looks like yo have it under control!

I would add that you can use the steel sump from an 8v vauxhall 2ltr (the sri engine) and cut and weld it yourself, which will save you £150.
another option if a manta 1.8 sump which is rwd.

Yukspeed do a weld up yourself exhaust kit of tubes for just over £100, though I think he's had them on ebay recently at £85..

engines regularly go on ebay for £2-300, also check out migweb, a vauxhall forum, though beware of the chavsum ring round your local scrappies too, you never know what they might have in...

I am getting mine from Ace Motorsport who specialise in these, he does cheap used carbs as well.

I have found another one with only 11K on the clock that I have agreed to buy for £300, but it is a 95 so would need an emissions test!!!

BMF,

be very careful that you're buying an XE and not an ecotec. I though they changed the XE for the ecotec around that time.

Ned, have done, according to the guy it is definately a XE.

I don't think I will go for it though because of the Cat and emissions test problems it would cause over using an older engine (pre '94), especially if I am using carbs.

What is your opinion?

I'd use an earlier engine for the emissions reasons as you've already suggested. The reason why they changed the Xe for the ecotec was due to emission regs changing. The ecotec is basically a different head on the same engine, though the port angles wer inclined further to stop over run on the cams, hence the lower flow the ecotec head produces giving it only 138bhp as opposed to 155bhp of the XE. Expect to see more like 175-180bhp on a decent setup of 45's though.

Ned, thanks. Makes my decision easier! 11K miles was so tempting at £300!

to be honest i'd be very sceptical of 11k on a 9 year old engine anyway..

He bought it 6 years ago from a scrappy, (has a receipt), and never built the car!

BMF, have you got any details for Ace, website etc? Do they supply the XE and carbs deal on a regular basis or have you just been lucky to find one at the right time?

Pete, speak to Andy, and he will sort you out.

He is not the cheapest for the engine, but he buys good ones as he re-builds them up to 270Bhp!

If it's of any interest, my current expenditure is listed on my website here:

http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/users/ned/costs/index.htm

need to update it as the bodywork price is out of date, but gives an idea of engine parts etc.
