transmission gear ratios
I know that the gearing of the transmission is set up with the power curve of the engine and intended driving arena in mind.
I am, however, getting a headache trying to figure out the effects of mating a Toyota W56 5-speed (pick up) transmission to a Toy 4AGE engine for use
in the Locost.
Can somebody ease the pain in my head and describe how this pairing will work?

It's more than that.
The relationship is gearbox, final drive (diff ratio), wheel/tyre overall diameter.
I think I have a excel spreadsheet detailing the effects of a change of any one of the above on my website.
Try the gearbox page.
For what it's worth I am using T50 box mated to 3.89:1 diff with 26.5 inch overall wheel diameter. This equates to what was fitted to the
original RWD Corolla and works out fine for me.
I did have a 3.54:1 diff but this was too high a gearing.

Just ran the figures for the W56 ratios through the sheet and the results were so close to what I posted for my car, I probably wouldn't change
anything.
If your figures for diff and wheels are same then it will work nicely, it will accelerate slightly better in 1st and 2nd, same gearing in 3rd and
4th.
