inlet manifold steel or ali?

I know that OE inlet manifolds of the past where cast in ali and that new versions are plastic due to their complex shapes and cost. Would it make much difference if a fabricated inlet manifold was made in mild steel, I know steel would suffer from heat transfer from the head but would the cast ali or plastic manifolds not have the same problem also? I know that ali seems to be the perfered material but I'm trying to keep the costs down.
Can any body tell me one way or the other as to the pros and cons of using ali over mild steel?

I think you have about covered it. You will get a little rust on the steel one but you do get some stand off that seems to keep this at bay when used often.

It does get very warm.

Have you seen the Gbs one that uses the plastic mani' as an injector plate, that should help with heat soak.

Mine

Make your own? I used a piece of 12mm ally plate and some ally tube ,shaped the plate by using an inlet manifold gasket as a template and cut it using a wood working coping saw with plenty of lube. Then got it welded up , total cost about £30-£35 and a bit of time

I'm looking to be able to provide manifolds for 7's and other low head clearance cars using the ford 2ltr EFI DOHC , EFI Pinto , 1800+2000 Zetec and still use the standard OE hardware such as the throttle body , TPS , MAP etc. Basicly make them as a just add doner parts and bolt straight on product and still be able to use the OE ECU or megasquirt.

I have made several mild steel/stainless manifolds for bike carbs. All worked fine with no problems. Easier to weld than alloy and cheaper. Might work ok with injection set up.
