Engine building.

Just a couple of thoughts I had while building my Zetec engine last night.

1) There has got to be a better way of putting gudgeon pin circlips in than this?

Two stabbed fingers and I'm glad I ordered two spare ones as i would have never found the one that pinged over the otherside of the workshop!

2)Graphogen assembly paste is great stuff! Why haven't I found this stuff before. Much easier than making a mess trying to lube everything with engine oil and if you don't happen to start your engine till three months later it won't have run off all the surfaces!

3) Piston ring compressors? Never had to use one on a bike engine. I could always nip them up with my fingers. These car rings are a bit more manly. Could I make one with a cut up coke bottle and some big cable ties?

Cheers,

DC

the coke thing might work...... may have seen similar improvised idea using jubillee clips.

a compressor isnt that expensive - possbly cheaper than shagging a ring if it snags on the top of the bore....

All kinds of piston ring compressors. There are the commercial equivilent to what your describing, basically a steel sleeve and a couple of clamps, all the way up to one off taper compressors (nice but specific to the bore so can get spendy if working on many different engines.

Are you working with the wire pin circlips? If you only plan to build the thing once then they're just great, but if you intent to tear down and rebuild the ones drilled to be removed and installed with retaining ring pliers are the best thing since beer! Cheers!
