heavy duty type 9
just sort of thinking, i might consider rebuilding a type 9 box... i want to make a heavy duty type box
anyone done it before? whats involved?
basically, my way of thinking has always been, engines and gearboxes, leave well alone, so i sort of need to get over that.
are there uprated bearing kits available? is there a sort of set route to go, or is it a case of getting what i need from a bearing supplier?
anyone got a knackered box laying about?
i've got one in the car already, just a standard one, but i feel like doing a heavy duty one just in case this one doesn't last

Short answer, No!
There are two diferent types of Type 9, one of which is the heavy duty type with a better bearing set up, and this is the box you would need to
rebuild, (if you can find one). HTH Ray

cheers Ray, so you can't rebuild a standard one with stronger bearings? it has to have originally been a HD one to start with?

^^ yes you can rebuild them with uprated bearings, some oiling modes and even HD syncro rings
thats what BGH do to make there HD boxes and they sell them as DIY kits too
(although you'll need to send them some of your bits to get modified)
and they can sort you out with a better 1st gear ratio or a whole close ratio set if you like - best to give them a call and talk throught the
options

brilliant! hadn't thought of them doing diy kits, thought they would want to do all the work themselves.
prices look pretty good too, not too expensive... might have to find my a suitable type 9 for rebuidling now... will be something to do next year i

T5 is a Borg Warner box, handles a lot of torque.
Was standard fit behind Ford small blocks, and Turbo Cosworth Sierra. Latest version has six speeds.

also made by tremec (later ones)
and I beleve the 6 speed is a T56 (as found in a viper or new mustang) but the extra gear is just extra weight IMHO
if you can find a 2wd cossie version of the T5 in good nick for sensable money (non-world class version with the ford 4cyl bellhousing) it'll
fit strait on to a pinto and most other older ford 4cly's (not sure about the starter position though as the cossie used a bigger flywheel)
but Blake's got a vauxhall engine so he'd need to start modifing bellhousings to make a T5 fit

and a new prop, and probably a new clutch slave cylinder, gearbox mounting,, even worse fit for the exhaust since i ruined it (or may be better?!
lol) blah blah blah, nah, will stick with type 9 i think. will give it some proper consideration actually, i don't know how good my current box
is, i'm sure its fine, but never seen it working properly yet
