Crossflow Oil

While thinking of changing the oil..
It seems new oil - because of emissions/cats has certain detergents & additives taken out..

------------------
I do not think it is a matter of 10w-40 Vs 15W -40 but the additive in the diesel oil.
The EPA had taken Zinc Dithiophosphate out of the regular motor oil.
lf your Kent engine has a HI LIFT cam then you need the EP additives.
The recommend diesel oil still has these additives.
Anyone with HiPo flat lifter cams should be using diesel oil.
------------------

I got 1700 BCF2 cam crossflow - shall i go for 10/40 semi synth diesel?
Any comments ..
cheers
Jon

Zddp levels have been slashed. Not a worry for more modern engines, but can be for old stuff.

You can buy an additive (ZDDPlus, I bought a dozen bottles in the states last year, raised an eyebrow at customs ) but not cheap over here.
May oils DO have enouh ZDDP in, just need to search them out. Millers, valvoline etc are good sources, not always cheap though. Saying that, I reckon it is worth paying to get a good oil......

Hi

It's quite simple. Valvoline 20/50 racing - VR1. As used in just about every performance X/flow and pinto in competition use. Available at around £22 - £35 depending on where you get it from.

Cheers Matt

Motor cycle oils still have higher % of the naughty additives

ISTR wikipedia has excellent articles on engine oil grades.
Most of the Japanese bike manufacturers were concered the cam follower wear so stuck with the old SE, SF or SG SAE classifications which allowed more anti-wear and anti-scuff additives.
