Turbo -v- Supercharger
I was about to ask if a BEC is better than a CEC, but then figured I should rake up an even older and more widely discussed topic!
I'm not so much concerned about what makes more power, rather than...
1. Typically, which is the easier install?
2. Which typically costs more?

I would have thought a turbo install is generally easier and probably cheaper. They're more widely available, more flexible in terms of
placement withing the engine bay, they don't require changing engine pulleys/drive belt arrangements....etc.

^^ Funny, because I would have said the exact opposite.
With a TC I feel like there is all the extra exhaust plumbing that must be done, whereas with a SC you just need to add it prior to the intake
manifold. Locations are somewhat limited with a super charger, but seems there is less to muddle with overall.
FWIW
One sec... lemme get my popcorn for the rest of this thread.

Answers to your Q...
1. Turbo
2. Supercharger
3. V8/BEC... someone always comes along sooner or later and think one of those two is the correct answer to any "which is best Q.

What about longevity of the blower itself... is it pretty much eeksy-peeksy between the two different types?

That I don't have experience with, but I think the best solution to your dilemma is to just make a twin charged lump. Then you can have both
and settle the argument once and for all.

Ill take my ticket, grab a beer, crisps and find my seat. This should be a gooood fight!
Track days ARE the best thing since sliced bread, until I get a supercharger that is!

For me, the turbo is probably the easier of the two to find & purchase. Try finding a decent price Rotrex that doesnt make you whince....
Power delivery of the SC is in my view , far more usable than a turbo engine. My old saab was very rapid, and the lag wasnt too bad, but driving it
quick on the bends required some pre-bend thought to keep it on boost - ie left foot braking or just keeping it nailed.
Longevity of the SC is a consideration, quite complex is the Rotrex compared to a turbo, apart from hillclimb use I would go for a turbo, based on
ease of purchasing/replacement/cost.
What engine are you talking about Scott ?

The 2.8 M52TU lump in the Z3
Been looking at NA tuning for it and there's not a lot of aftermarket support... and those parts that are available are stupidly expensive and
don't add a great deal.
I understand that the internals are good for up to 400 with a blower... and there are reasonably priced bolt-on kits available (of both FI flavours).

What about intercoolers... are they essential, or only once you start going for serious boost?

According to Corky Bell, they aren't mandatory but they can dramatically increase the life of the blower and engine. I forget the formula that
determines the level of boost that can be run before you starting getting pre-ignition but its in that Supercharged! book by Mr. Bell.

I know of a number of non-intercooled Supercharged cars which are meant to make big numbers and....don't. Simple because the temp of the air
coming into the engine is so high.

Intercoolers are a must IMO.
I'd say a turbo is far cheaper and easier. OK you have exhaust plumbing but thats all pretty 'basic' compared to having custom
pulleys machined, sorting belt tensions, pulley sizes bla bla bla. Rotrex seems popular now and I can see why but the prices are phenominal compared
to a £400ish garrett.

If the boost is low, then you could feasibly get away with no IC, its about how much the engine starts detonating when your giving it big licks. If
your looking for 400bhp, the Rotrex you had on the BB engine wouldnt make that. Turbo it with a Mitsubushi td04 19t from a Saab/Volvo
For what ICs cost, its easier to fit one, there will be room up front to fit one in.
