Zetec (Blacktop) waterpump and clutch
Hi Guys,
I know there has been lots of threads on here with regard to fitting the waterpump and clutch to a Zetec but I just want to confirm I get the right
bits before I spend my hard earned..
I have a 2.0ltr Blacktop out of 99 Mondeo
Just about to change the Cam belt so thought I would also change the waterpump at the same time, which is the best waterpump to fit? I've heard
escort, mondeo but want to confirm the right one for my fit, as in correct rotation etc. If Escort which model/year?
While I'm at it I have got hold of a Flywheel from a 1.8 Zetec (Mk1 focus) and will be fitting a Type9 gearbox. Can someone please confirm which
clutch, coverplate and release bearing I will need for this? I will be using the bellhousing from my Sierra donor (1.8 CVH) if the helps.
Thanks

OK, IMO its best to keep the oem waterpump. I did this and just used a spare idler to get it going the right way...
Heres mine...
I used a 1.8 flywheel with a Mk1 1.8 Mondeo clutch and a Capri, CT133 release bearing. The clutch cost me £20 off ebay. You need the Capri release
bearing so the release arm is in the correct position to arc properly.
I have a n ST170 engine in mine so if you need some more info just ask, I have tons of pics.
Good luck,

Thanks Steve,
I Like the idea of re-using the same water pump and fabricating a bracket to suit. I think I still have the idler that was originally fitted to the
left of the water pump.
Did you use the original alternator too?

I did the same as Coozer on the waterpump.
As for flywheels, I fitted the 1.8 CVH flywheel as it is approx 2kg lighter then an 1.8 Zetec flywheel, making the engine a bit more responsive. Plus
the CVH clutch and release bearing can all be used just as they were on the CVH [I had a brand new clutch etc. available so it seemed to make sense!]
edit: The CVH flywheel holes need drilling out though.
The only downside is that you need to ft a trigger wheel to the front pulley but again the CHV one can be used. I welded mine to the standard
Blacktop front pulley.

No mate, the zetec alternator doesn't have a regulator so is no good for our cars. On the Mondeo/Focus etc the alternator is regulated by the
ECU.
Mine is a Brise one which I got brand new very cheap off ebay. Best to find a small one off Micra or other Japanese car.

Thanks for that Steve, I will have a look around my local scrappy to see what is available on the alternator side and have a bash at fabricating a
bracket for the idler.
What do you find was the best belt to use for your setup in the end?

As you can see in the pic, I used the long serpentine belt on held it with a gripper. Run a tape round and go down to Halfords, find the correct width
(6 ribs?) and length. All the Halford belts have the mm lenght on them.

On a Blacktop you have no option but to retain the original type of waterpump and go with the idler pulley arrangement, there are many variations,
which type depends on where you want to fit the alternator. On a Silvertop you change the Mondeo pump to an Escort one to avoid the alternator idler
pulley arrangement, a new waterpump is much heaper than the pulley and bracketry.
