Any suggestions for cleaning a chopped sump prior to welding?

I degreased then used Mr Muscle oven cleaner. Worked a treat!
I would have then put it in the dishwasher but swmbo put her foot down.

I used thinners, but did leave it outside for a while before attempting to weld

Ally or steel? If you're welding ally, you'll need to clean with a stainless wire brush or a Scotchbrite disc in the grinder. For steel,
use a flappy-disc or Scotchbrite disc. If you're asking how to degrease the sump, use a degreaser, such as Gunk.
