cvk carb set up advice too rich

hi all

after much searching on the forum i have found much info on enriching the fule on a set of cvk 38 carbs
but very limited info on leaning it out.

i have a 2 ltr pinto block completly standard except for the carbs.
im averaging 17 mpg and finding it kicking out black smoke from exhauste.

the main jets are standard and have not been drilled out
(can not fit 1.5 mm drill through hole so assume there standard)

i have checked the float chambers so they are all at the same correct level
(level with the line where the bottem bowl fits to the carb)

i am using a standard ford fule pump going to a fule rail with a return to tank so not to over pressure float chambers

i have set the pilot jet to a 1 and 7/8 turn off fully screwed in as recomended by another forum.

the needels have not been shimmed. but even on tick over i can see a lot of fule comming up through jet and goin into the manifold.

i have also plugged the brass ports on the on the bottem left had side of the aire intake side. but left the center brass port open as recomended by bogg brothers

any help would be great

my suggestion would be fit the bike fuel pump. Also, extra air flow to carbs wouldnt hurt.

I would suspect fuel pressure.
I have a pinto on bike carbs and fitted a Sytec inline regulator set to 1.5 psi.

I'll be in the garage dear!

ok heres some feed back

i have just plumbed in a pressure guage to check what pressure my fule its entering and exiting the fule rail.
as it enters and returns on the same diametor hose there is not even 1 psi showing. almost atmospheric presure

so i dnt think i am having issues with over pressuring the carbs

Hi Can i ask did you ask Bogg Brothers about blocking the air correction brass holes or just here say , you say you blocked the left hand
Well when boggs set my car up they blocked the one in line with the main jets/ needle

On here people have had lots of trouble getting the carbs to work properly until they fitted the right fuel pump [ bike ]

hi jako

i spoke to bogg brothers about the brass port yes but did not get a straight answer. the guy on the phone said different carbs you block different ports so try bothen and see witch is best.

are you running cvk 38's too ?
if so i will deffinatly try the other ports

hi jacko

iv checked your pics and see that mine are not the same as yous ( uploaded pic of mine to archive for you to see)

would it still be the same port to block ?

i have heard from a friends that on tick over the car should just be fuled by the pilot jet ?

at the moment i tick over about 850 /900 rpm and i can see fule entering the carbs through the main jet already

any one got any idead why or if it should or shouldnt be ?

ps the car runs fine not poping or banging . just using loads of fule and got some very sooty plugs

I've got ZX6r carbs and the air correctors were open when I got my hands on them. I then plugged them and everything went very rich (and wouldn't lean out) so I re-drilled. Try drilling them out - you can always refill them with solder to plug them.

hi david

i have un plugged the ports this morning and repeated the same 86 mile journey i did yestersday.

yesterday used 19.1 ltrs ( need at 1/4 tank)

today the needle has stoped about hald way between 1/2 and 1/2 so deffinatly less fule used

will go fill tank tomorrow and see how much exsactly but looking good so far

also engin has start coughing back thro carbs and also popping the exhaust when not on load .

this may be due to removing plugs and needs timing setting again but nothing that carnt be sorted

Usually a sign of running weak try pilot screws 2-1/4 out.

Be careful as by drilling the correctors out you may have gone very lean. You really need to get it on a rolling road or use a lambda gauge to check the AFR throughout the range of engine conditions. Too lean and you could risk melting a piston!

Adjusting the idle screws will only affect the fuelling at idle. Adjusting the needle height will give you a bit more fuel throughout the range but the ultimate amount of fuel that can be flowed will be controlled by the jet size.

I found my Pinto is very sensitive to carb balancing. Before balalncing it would spit back through the carb. Took me a while to get it spot on (I invested in a morgan carbtune) but the difference was amazing. Engine used to pop and bang and wobble about. Now I can get a 20p piece balanced on the rocker cover - with the engine running

Ryan the lads above this post have answered all your questions .
As said mind you don't go lean and cause damage
also as said you really need to get it on a rolling road and set up correctly

Hi all thanks for the advice .

I always planned to get in rolling roadbed but wanted it some where near first and to have a definitive answer on the carbs witch I now have .

The car is now in the garrage and work will start on a mega jolt installation. Once complete it will be set up on a rolling road

Thanks once again for all the advice
