Crossflow to Type 9 box

Is there any reason why I cannot use the Escort Mk2 pre engaged type starter with the Type 9 bellhousing. And the standard Escort flywheel?

A long, long time ago, did exactly what you are preposing (in a MK2 escort that all-ready had a type 9 fitted). However, to get everything to line up, I had the Zetec flywheel machined to take the Crossflow ring gear, at the same distance back from the front of the bell-housing. This meant the ring-gear was towards the rear of the flywheel, rather than near the front (I think).
It worked fine with no problems for 2 years, before I sold the car.

Most Xflo ring gears are for inertia starters the chamfer on the ring gear that eases the drive gear engagement is on the wrong side.

The gears on inertia starters engages from the gearbox side, pre-engage starters engage from the engine side.

maybe wrong but i thought crossflows were fitted to a rocket box which was basically a 4 speed type 9

I know most crossflows are inertia, but I have in stock a new pre engaged starter for a Mk2 Escort and a new pre engaged ring gear. I will be balancing the engine, when I have lightened the flywheel.

I am just trying to use up some bits I have.

I knew they would come in handy some day!!!!!

^^ according to burton's guide the type E was only fitted to 1.6 and 2.0 cars (the 'rocket box' is the close ratio version)
most normal escorts got a type 2 instead

My car uses a type 9 connected to a Xflow with a pre engaged starter. Provided you use the correct ring gear you shouldn't have any problems ,in fact starting is likely to be much better. IIRC the pre engaged ring gear has a different number of teeth to the inertia type and of course has the chamfer on the opposite side

When I built my car I fitted a cross flow from a fiesta XR2 the standard flywheel had a ring gear to suit a pre engaged starter. I used one from a sierra and had to space it back from the bell housing by about 10mm but it worked perfectly well.
