Duratec conversion - definitive list?

Hi,

Now that I bought a Westy with a CVH engine and haven't even picked it up yet, I've started planning a duratec conversion in my head (something for the winter!).

I've read Flak Monkey's thread about his duratec build (very good and highly amusing how it migrated away from being a budget build to being a nigh on 300bhp monster )

I would want to follow the budget route, maybe running bike TB's.

Is there a definitive list somewhere of the various parts that need to be gathered and maybe the best place to get them from?

My plan would be to start shopping around and keeping an eye out for the various bits and bobs to stockpile them all fro when I'm ready to do a conversion.

Cheers in advance,

Steve

Thanks - I've seen this one already too but it doesn't cover all the little ancilleries like starter moters etc.

I'll read through Flak's post again and try to pull together a list of parts from it.

I don't have a complete list yet but it's certainly a lot more than I was expecting, especially going from a carburettor car to an injection set up. I could try later to list everything I've bought so far but it will be for an MX5 gear box instead of Type 9. If your car already has a Type 9 I would definitely suggest you stick with it. The MX5 box has brought up a lot of its own issues that need to be accounted for.

If you could that'd be great - the more I can read about other people's hassles hopefully the less I'll have (or at least I'd be mentally prepared for them, which makes a big difference!)

Having done a bit more research, it sounds like going from CVH to Zetec is a much easier path (from what I've read so far, anyway).

And for that matter I should be able to transfer across the twin 40's as well.

My only quarm about this route is that the Zetec is getting a bit old hat itself now and the fact that the more modern Duratec 2.0 is in the region of 145 to 150 bhp as standard is hard to ignore.

You've seen my thread that DH2 linked to, I've pretty much listed every item required, it really comes down to the items that your engine comes with, mine had starter which is Duratec specific, coil on plugs and mechanical thermostat with it, other than that it's fuel and water hoses and the sensors your ECU needs to run.

With bike TB's you'd be looking at an easy 180+, with a decent set of TB's, free flowing inlet and good exhaust you should be getting very close to 200. That said it isn't a cheap set up.

This is my list, going from a carburettor Crossflow to a fuel injection system. It's probably not complete:

2.0 Engine
MX5 Gear box
ARP Con rod bolts
Con rod bearings
ARP Crank Pulley Bolt
ARP Flywheel bolts
MX5 Starter Motor
MX5 Flywheel
MX5 Clutch
Spigot Bearing

GSXR1000 Throttle Bodies
GSXR TB rubber mounts
GSXR air box for trumpets, MAP, and air temp sensor

Low Pressure Pump
High Pressure pump
HP filter
Swirl Pot

Mechanical Thermostat
Fuel Rail with built in return line
Exhaust Manifold
Engine Mounts (Home made with flanges from FastDan)
Coolant Hose (With 500mm/32mm dia. aluminium pipe for a return line)
8mm fuel pipe. I used the previous 6mm supply line as a return line and put in a new 8mm supply line.
Microsquirt ECU
EDIS4/coilpack for MS

New Throttle Cable
Hydraulic clutch system for MX5 box

MX5 box has no mechanical speedo drive so I will need a new electronic speedo
Shorter propshaft with MX5 fitting
Shortened sump (MX5 box leans to 10* so the Raceline MX5 sump is a lot more epxensive or you could make one yourself)

Raceline oil filter housing (Oil filter sticks out horizontally to save a couple of inches on the side. It means the oil filter misses the chassis)
Oil breather catch tank

Sensors needed:
MAP
Throttle position
Intake air temperature
Coolant temperature
Oil pressure
Crank position
Lambda sensor (Narrow or wideband)

Plus a bunch of bits and pieces. Nuts, bolts, fuel hose connectors, threaded bar. General ancillaries.

I daren't add up how much I have spent but now its running and sounding very sweet. I know it will be worth it.

If you are using a type 9 you will need a Duratec to T9 bell housing -I got mine cheap off ebay for £47.00, but you will normally spend few hundred on this alone.

Duratec Engine is fitted, MS2 Extra V3 is assembled and tested, engine running, car now built. IVA passed 26/02/2016

Its not cheap but its a great engine Nice and light and reasonable power out of the box. We run a 2.3 with only ZX9R carbs and a lightened flywheel (because a new one is a necessity of the conversion anyway) and its bloody rapid on track. Made 165bhp @ wheels on Bogg Bros rolling road.

Our conversion was reasonably budget and probably cost us £1400 ish. A quick summary of what I can remember:

2.3 lump sourced very cheaply (£300)
All parts to interface with type 9 from RWD motorsport - clutch, bellhousing, fly, release arm (circa £600?)
Megajolt ignition management inc coilpack, EDIS (circa £250 all in)
ZX9R carbs (£70)
danST inlet manifold (£160)
modified pinto 4 branch (£45 stainless flange, welded ourselves)
own design water rail (£30 silicone and aluminium tube)
transit thermostat (£70 maybe? cant remember?)
own design shortened and gated/baffled OE sump (few quid in alu sheet)
danST Engine mounts (£80)

I think that about covers it.

I've got a blog going (www.furyrebuild.co.uk) which has a lot of information on and grows all the time.

I've just welded up a flak monkey sump (and am pleased with it). I've got an agreement with him to produce them. U2U if you want to chat about it.

Cheers for the advice guys.

I'm still weighing up how much hassle and money it is over and above going to a zetec - from initial research going to a silver top is very straight forward as things like bellhousings etc fit. However I know that nothing is ever straight forward and also that the duratec might well be worth the extra hassle in the long run.

I'd almost definitely be interested in one of them there sumps though
