changing sump gasket. info rqd

hello all
i plan to put a shortened sump on my cvh engined car.
according to haynes manual, i states engine out, seperate gearbox and remove clutch and flywheel.
is this correct or necessary
seems a bit ott to me
my engine is in car, dont plan on taking it out and dont really fancy seperating gearbox
was hoping to undo bolts for sump, take out sump off, clean up , new gasket then screw new sump up
help and advice appreciated
steve

There are two bolts on the back of the sump that you can not get to with the box on the engine and the splash guard inbetween.
