R1 Indy BEC Engine Position Help Required
MK Have sold me a manifold, silencer and engine cradle for an 5PW R1 Engine.
Problem is, when I put the whole lot together, the silencer is too long (by about 6 inches) and fouls on the near side rear wheel.
If I move the engine forward, the engine fouls on the bonnet because it's position is outside the bonnet bulge.
The engine cradle they provided also causes the sump of the R1 engine to be lower than the chassis.
I called MK who advised me I can cut 6 inches out of my brand new stainless silencer and I should also cut 30mm out of the sump, reposition the drain
plug to keep it above the bottom of the chassis.
I want to make sure the engine is in the correct place relative to the bulkhead before I cut the exhaust. Can someone please post a few pictures of
their R1 engine mounting possibly with some position dimensions so I can position mine in the same place.
When I asked MK for this info they said "Just put it as far back as you can" - personally, I'd prefer to position it where others
have so I know it's going to work.
And finally, can someone please elaborate on the sump reduction of 30mm and let me know if this is good info or if there is another way to mount the
engine - e.g. throw away their stock cradle and weld up my own one to get the sump above the chassis.
I have seen some pictures on here where a small spacer is used between the under side of the cradle and the top of the chassis to raise the engine
slightly, surely this should only be for minor adjustments.
Advice / Help / Info greatly appreciated.

There are a few pictures in my archive which may help, and the sump does fall below the bottom chassis rails.

I doubt you will be able to get the sump clear above chassis rail unless you want bonnet clearance issues as well.
is this going into an MK R1 chassis?

I don't have an MK, but I have two unrelated cars with an R1 install (5VY - essentially the same where we're concerned here).
Both cars have the sump bottom below the chassis. I have relocated the drain plug to the side of the circuit car, simply because it runs lower ground
clearance.
The R1 sump is beautifully flat and carphillic. My other installs (GSXR), the sumps aren't flat, they're tapered. I cut the lower bit off
the sump and weld a plate (with difficulty, it's shite alloy) to square it off a bit. The sumps, though, sit a *lot* lower than the R1 install
(left a rupturing chunk on the kerb around Dibeni at Pembrey). Point I'm making is that putting the R1 sump lower than the chassis isn't
an issue for me. Helps get a filter/airbox/whatever under the bonnet nicely too.

Daveg - Interesting question.... and it's good I'm clearly not alone on this one. Is there a difference between the chassis then?
I've got all the mounts from MK for the R1 engine. I bought the car as a part build so I'm not too sure?? How would I tell ?
Renetom - UTU sent.
motorcycle_mayhem - What you're describing is a similar fear to what I have. I live near a primary school and the only way to the house is
across what I can only describe as a bmx style "table top" speed-ramp. This is just going to eat the sump if it's too low before
I'm even out of the end of my road. I need to do something. Having not yet had the sump off, was there enough space in the sump to trim it
down this magic 30mm MK were on about?
