If the knock goes away when you pull No. 2 lead then it is almost certainly piston or big end on that cyl causing the problem.

You mention Snapper, so I'm guessing you're in Essex? I have a complete good 4AGE lump sitting here that I want £100 for if that helps (recentlt taken out of an MR2), also have lots of 4AGE bits from another engine if you want a crank/piston etc.

Best of luck with it whatever happens

Russ

Big ends, definitely. Has it been sat for a while?
They're pretty easy to replace.

IIRC it had done around 95,000, was a 100% sound engine, no smoke, rattles or untoward noises

It's a common issue with 4age's Especially if it's sat for a while.
There's no need to rebuild your engine over this if you caught the problem early enough. I've just replaced the bearings on my 4age and I've haven't got any problems with it. Did you damage the crank at all?

Cheap engine spares are widely available for the 16V versions.

Get onto Driftworks or a guy on ebay. The ebay guy is breaking loads or MR2s which have the same engine.
