CVH-v-Zetec air filter positioning

Good afternoon all!

I've been pondering over my car on a very boring bank holiday afternoon making a note of the things that I want to change.

The biggest thing that bothers me at the moment is the air filter arrangement that the car had when I bought it.

The car is currently running a 1600 CVH with twin 40's. The current air filters are the horrible metal 'tea strainer' types, the foreward most of which is pressed up against the inside of the bonnet. I want to fit something a bit more free flowing and maybe get a little more power out too (car came with a dyno print out showing 116BHP - it's running the twin 40 DCOE's and a 4-2-1 exhaust but the rest looks standard).

I'm planning a future upgrade to a Zetec as to get more power from the CVH would cost a fortune and end up with an output not to far away from the starting point of a 2.0 black top - I'll probably just transfer the webers across for the time being and then upgrade to either 45's or throttle bodies.

My question is: If I cut a hole in the side of the bonnet to allow fitment of a decent filter and get some air flow, would the position be the same (or near as dammit) between a CVH and Zetec?

I'm guessing I'll have to do something about the dip stick location too s it currently sticks up right in the middle of the carbs at the moment.

I don't want to end up with random holes and cut outs all over the car (hence looking at a zetec rather than duratec so I don't have to switch exhaust sides etc).

Hopefully all that makes sense!

Cheers

Steve

I went zetec from cvh in my striker. The air filter placement is very close, the block of both are very similar. Both inlet and exhaust holes only needed minor tweaking after the install for me.

I believe the zetec was essentially based on the block of the cvh, so engine mounts are similar too.

You'll probably need to re-jet the carbs if they were originally jetted with the power-restrictors in place.

I thought as much - I'm thinking about taking it to a rolling road and getting it dyno'd and set up.

Ideally you need a flow of cooler air to maximise performance, you are at the minute using air heated by the engine temp so losing power, the bonnet will also restrick flo to at least one of the barrels

My thoughts had been to fit a better flowing filter, vent the bonnet side and also duct some cold air up to just in front of the filter too - should ensure decent flow of cold air.
