Tips for R1 rebuild & tune

We (me and a friend who is an engineer) took the r1 engine out of my Indy yesterday for a winter rebuild (and the sun is out today, Sod's law). The objective is to make it more robust and get some more go out of it.

I'm also going to take the opportunity to improve the airflow in the engine bay and under the car (diffuser).

I wondered if anyone could give me any tips on the engine please?

It's standard ATM but has a baffle. Barnett clutch on the car too. Car is used on road but mainly track. Carb engine. 5JJ I believe.

Other than having some head work done and uprating cams then a good rolling road set up and some dynojetting i think you have most things covered sump baffle is ample and even standard clutchs as ok so barrnett one is fine....plus they are a great engine and really strong, I personally dont think your going to see a massive improvement without spending lots of pennys by doing the above or going down the turbo route

give it a good service chuck it back in and enjoy the last good few days of the year that would be my idea

If it aint broke dont fix it!

The bolts that join the crank case halves are made of chocolate. The tightening torque is something like 6Nm from memory, which is about the weight of the torque wrench on its own. It is VERY easy to snap the bolts. Be careful. Crank case shells are sold in halves, so you need to buy two per journal. Other than that, I manages to do mine on my own, following nothing but the haynes manual.
