Type 9 Variants?
I have this gearbox kicking about now, i believe it is a type 9..
Can anyone else tell me anything about? is it 4/5speed etc? what are the tell tail signs?

All type 9s were 5 speed.

That is a 5 speed type 9. Cannot be sure what it came from simply from the photo's but the bellhousing looks like a 4 cylinder one which has had
a lump of the starter housing cut off.
The "A" on the casing indicates its a standard layshft type, there is a type "E" with a HD spigot type layshaft but its only
fitted to V6 boxes, gord knows what happended to types B, C and D.
Its not an early one, I can tell that from the position of the oil filler and the tailcase casting but a photo showing the end of the input shaft
would be useful.
Pretty sure its a 4 cylinder petrol which is probably the most useful type.

No there was a 4 speed variant
The one in the photo is a 5 speed identified by the ally tail housing that houses the 5th gear
4 speed has a shorter tail housing with no bulge at the gearbox end

It was bolted up to my ST170 engine..
now it has been identified, how much is it worth? i am having a good old clear-out at the moment!

the type 9 was 5 speed only
it was based on the 4 speed type E, but there was never a 4 speed type 9

If good seem to fetch around £100. Sometimes more, sometimes less etc.
Being able to say it is def good will make a substantial difference.....

Yep.My understanding as well.2.0 Mk3/4 Cortinas and RS 2000 Escorts were equiped with the type 9 4 speeder.The holy grail version being the Rocket
box and Quaifes' straght cut offering.

I have a Ford blue print of the Type 8 stating 4 and 5 speed
However we are both right
The type 9 or type 9
Has the same main case as the type E and a very similar tail housing except for the 5th gear in the tail housing out side of the main case
Ford have always been good at mixing parts then confusing us with the designation names
i.e. the Zetec badged as a Duratec

The RS2000 was fitted with a Type E as were 2 litre Cortinas. The type 9 came out in about 1983 long after the Cortina and mk 2 escort had died.
The 4 speed Type 9 was a short lived beast only fitted to a few Sierras. It is pretty useless in most respects since no gear kits are available for
it. Easilly spotted since it uses a Type 9 bolt in gear lever instead of the screw in Type E.

(the later MT75 boxes had it behind 5th with a ring to lift instead)
