Zetec clutch problem

Yesterday afternoon got the cvh sump bolted up to teh zetec, all sorted.
Found the flywheel (Dunnel lightened one) and the clutch (LUK)
Popped that all on.
Rummaged about, found the new bearing, a motorcraft ECB110, listed as capri 1.6 ohc, and others , supposedly the same as the QH cct133??

Anyway, came to bolt it up and the bearing is too long, it is pressing on the fingers of the clutch. I dug about and found the one I had previously used, a sierra one of some description I think, and it is thinner. I always reckoned it was too thin, and could have done with a bit less free play. I may have been wrong...

Anyway, I also had another clutch. pretty sure it is from a std zetec 1800 flywheel. This time a valeo (again, near new)
I measured the distance from the engine backplate to a straight edge across the ends of the clutch fingers. Both clutches the same at 90mm.

Anybody got any idea what clutch I actually have and which clutch bearing I should be using? I forgot to measure the bearings, but will do so in a spare moment today (like that is going to happen, moving "stuff most of the day and a 12 car rally tonight...) But I live in hope.

Thanks
Clive

If you look carefully at the plastic bearing carrier you'll see the ECB110 is deeper
If the standard one is to short and the ECB to long then modification of the clutch arm or even easier a longer pivot pin in the bellhousing will push the bearing closer

ECB110/CCT133 is right for standard zetec clutch and standard flywheel. CCT132 from pinto sierra is right for zetec flywheel pinto clutch. The problem here is that you have a Dunnel flywheel which is mounting the clutch in a different place relative to the engine. Can you measure from backface of the block to clutch face of the flywheel with the Dunnel item fitted and then the 1800 zetec flywheel fitted. Probably end up with the CCT132 being fine.
Incidentally the bearing is supposed to be held against the diaphragm fingers with slight spring pressure and no slack in the system when your foots off the pedal. That's how Uncle Henry designed it.

I think I will have to use the shorter bearing. The difference is probably 10mm from memory.

Are you sure the bearing should be against the clutch all the time? I have always assumed a little free play to allow for plate wear.

I take it there isn't an inbetween bearing? bit hopeful I guess!

The release bearing is held against the clutch with a very light spring on the pedal end. Well it has been on my cars since 1988. Its light enough not to put any load on it but without it there is a possibility of the cable coming detached from the release arm.

ah, that's different to tight at the mechanism end. wear will be allowed for in the light spring. Anyhow, my head is now sorted on the matter.
Seems I must have a pinto clutch, which is fine. In fact my spare is as well....so that should be enough to last me for 200k.
