ST 170 VVT

Well after many hours of trying to understand why my ST170 motor would not run well off load and it demonstrating a miss fire and unstable Lambda I have found that the VVT seems to be moving around... So can't get to look at the car until next weekend but anyone experienced the cam moving without the solenoid being triggered?

if the solenoid isn't being triggered the VCT housing isn't getting the correct oil pressure to hold it in any fixed position.

have you timed the engine up correctly, try switching the solenoid to get the VCT housing full of oil

have you got the correct PWM & cam phase sensor control? if not you need to either trigger the solenoid at a given RPM/load
or fit a VCT delete kit and a vernier pulley ans adjust it to static timing

see my thread here: VCT Delete
