Which Carbs for a Standard C20XE???

40's or 45's on a standard 2.0 XE... ???

45s, and I'm 99% sure you need Type 52s, which have the correct progression holes for the 16v Vauxhall.

I would have thought 45's too, but I've been reading on some sites that they may be overkill on an engine with no performance mods.

Dont forget 45mm is the bore of the body casting, 40mm venturis are about the biggest you can go, with 40's you're down to 34mm maybe 36mm.

I'd think 40s would be past their limit.

SBD write the gospel on xe's -they say 45s over 48s.
But have you considered TBs?

I've often heard it said that Carb's are a false economy, and to a certain extent I agree as a clean set of 45's are about the same price as a set of Jenveys (and both will need rolling-roaded), but I need short-term cheapness on this project.

I'll likely go FI in the future. Carb's always make good money second-hand, so they won't be a wasted investment.

I would save a little cash and go for 36mm chokes in a set of 40's, especially as you wish to move to FI in the future.
Jenvey's website suggests that 40mm throttle bodies are good for up to 200hp. So a 40mm bore manifold would suit the webers and Jenvey throttle bodies. A 45mm manifold would not.
Am I making sense?
I have 40mm Solexes on my 3SGE engined car and they are fine. 36mm chokes. Over 160hp.
There are plenty of websites with Weber sizing charts.
What about using Solexes? If you do I've got loads of jets!

Im with Spyder on this. Having done quiet a few XE installs i would only use 40`s on a std engine.
Still very cheap to get hold of as opposed to the 45 too.
They will respond slightly better and are ample for the power.

A standard VX will run fine on 40's providing you fit 36mm chokes. If upgraditis strikes you will probably think you need 45's but the only advantage will be the ability to fit bigger chokes which will kill the bottom end if you go above 38's. Fine on the track, useless on the road.

If you have good 40's use them.

If a perfect set of used 40's are available buy them.

Whatever you do beware of most of the tat on e-bay. Mostly old rubbish off Lotus's and Alfas etc that is for sale for a very good reason, i.e. its either knackered or has fixed jets.

Webers are a great carburettor and a good set once jetted are totally reliable. Old Webers can be a money pit, beware.
