ZX12R Cylinder Head
Just cleaned up the cylinder head and checked for warpage. The service manual suggests a service limit of upto 0.002" after which the head
should be replaced. Most of the areas we checked were upto 0.002" but a couple of areas were 0.003" What would other Locostbuilders do in
this scenario? Options are;
1 - Do nothing. The new head gasket will take the tolerance
2 - Get the cylinder head lapped flat
3 - Replace the cylinder head
If we go for option 2, any recommendations or idea of likely cost to have the work done by a specialist?
All and any advice is welcome. Never been here before.

i would lap it in and use a race head gasket also after you have torqued it down leave it over night and re torque it to allow the gasket to settle
down
same after the first few heat cycles

Lap it in using 1500 wet and dry and a sheet of glass to remove the high spots then clean and put back.

After ringing round a few places today, it was pointed out to me that if the head is skimmed, the pistons could hit the valves. One place which was
recommended, suggested that although the head was 0.003" out, they would have to take off approximately 0.008"
If we were to do it ourselves using the method mentioned by Rick and Mark and remove 0.003", could we still use the standard head gasket or
would it require a race gasket and if so, where could we get a 'race' gasket?

No need to pull it down 3 thou, just remove the high spots until it's within specs and use a standard gasket.

The manual states that the tolerance is 0.000" and if it exceeds this, then to get it repaired. However, the maximum service limit is
0.002". If it's greater, then the head needs replacing (according to the manual).
To get the head back to tolerance would require 0.003" to be removed.

But if all you need do is take the high spot(s) out, you'll only be removing a tiny amount from a few probably small sections. How much is a
another cylinder head?
