Smokey Duratec
I've got a problem with my Duratec billowing out blue smoke. Before I installed the engine the compression wasn't fantastic when turning
it over by hand. I was advised to put some oil through the spark plug holes, which seemed to help. Since then I've run the engine maybe a dozen
times for 10-15 minutes each time. A couple of times there was no smoke until it started warming up.
I've done a compression test warm and cold with WOT and the cylinders are consistently identical. I don't have a leak down tester.
Is it likely to be the piston rings or could it still be oil in the chambers burning off? How can I tell?

It could be bore wash you really shouldnt be running your engine for 10-15 minutes and turning off, if you do it needs to be at high revs so it
reaches self cleaning temperatures, have a smell at the oil and see if you can smell a strong wiff of petrol.
If petrol gets into the oil it thins, which allows it past the valve seals into the combustion chamber and it burns - can do a lot of dammage.
How do I know this - cos it happended to me!
If you do have petrol in oil change oil and filter and hope no dammage done, give it a good thrash after oil change to remove varnish inside etc..

The oil does smell of petrol. Fingers crossed an oil change will fix it!
What kind of damage can be done? Corroded valve seals?

what oil are you running in it? they are pretty sensitive to oil, if you get it wrong they will eat a set of rings in no time.

Damage can be anywhere the oil goes if it has thinned out, I got oil leaking out of my exhaust manifold funnily enough.

So I did an oil swap. Straight off, there was a lot less smoke on start up. I got the temperature up by revving between 1-3,000rpm and holding it at
2,000rpm for a bit every now and then. Once it was warm it was giving out big puffs of black smoke on throttle and a little puff of blue smoke on
lift-off when I was revving to 5-6,000rpm. It's still a little smokey but much better than it was before. I guess some more revving should clean
up the chambers and hopefully sort it out.
The oil I took out had no metal filings that I could see, so hopefully there's been no damage.
The wooden sheds people call houses here don't offer much sound protection so I don't like to spend too long with a barely silenced engine
revving up and down.
I've been having a lot of different fuel supply issues making the engine run badly but I think they're all sorted now. It's now
revving nice and freely and sounds much smoother. I'm sorely tempted to give it a quick blast up and down my quiet back road but it might be
best to hold off until it's registered.
