RV8 runing temp?

What temp does a rover V8 run at?

Looking to get a temp switch for the electric rad fan.

Thanks.
Steve

90C on the gauge typically but can rise to 100C in traffic. I would recommend fitting a cooler thermostat though if possible. I've got a 74C thermostat in mine as this is better for power. Obviously not so good if you need to run a heater for the car interior from it. Not sure what temp my fan switch is set to but I think it used to be 95C and I fitted a lower temp fan switch when I fitted the 74C 'stat. I think it might be an 88 or 89C switch but make sure the switch is a higher temp to the 'stat otherwise the fan will run all the time.

HTH,
Craig.

Ideally for good power and performance around 70C - so I fit mini summer stats in mine which are typically 74C The rad fan comes in and out at 85/80.

Your rad fan needs to set to your engine stat so you need to determine whats fitted.

Ok, how do I determine the stat? As far as I know its a standard one.. 3.9 injection.

Not taken the stat out yet but does it have the temp on it??

Not sure if the stat has the temp marked but they had 82 degrees in SD1 and that was later changed to 88 degrees.

Lots of people retro fit the 74 degree stats especially if the engine is high performance - avoids overheating issues leading to slipped liners.

If your install is stock then you should be OK with an 88 degree stat.

This may answer your question.

Can't remember what stat I had in mine (lowest I could find?), but I do remember drilling some extra holes around the outside so there was continuous flow even with a closed thermostat.

Good point Simon, I did that too.

Also, my first 74C 'stat turned out to be dead on arrival which caused me some grief so I recommend testing your brand new 'stat before fitting. No need to test the calibration but at least test that it opens if you pour water from a kettle on it.

Craig, I think it may have been you or Mark (Chandler) who suggested it in the first place, so I couldn't take the credit for the idea

Simon,
Very gracious but I think it might have been David Hardcastle who deserves the credit on this one. Pretty sure I read the advice in one of his RV8 books here: http://www.meerkats.uk.com/bookshelf/motor-engineering/

Hmm, looks like someone is trying to profiteer and it sure as hell ain't me. Thanks for spotting this. I'll see if I can update those book recommendation links. My guess is that there is a new revision or something. That really annoys me actually because when I created those links they were normal and I have those actual books on my shelf.

Thanks again.

Edit: The world has gone mad. I just tried searching for those books at the Amazon home page and those are still the same links. Crazy prices. WTF?
