Type 9 Mounting

Having fitted my type 9 gearbox I find that there is a bit of movement on the chassis mounting evident with the movement of the gearstick. It could just be a tired rubber chassis mounting but I have done away with the very large dished washer that sits under the mounting and bolts through to the gearbox casing. In its normal fittin eg; Sierra, is it designed to prevent too much gearbox movement?

Either Westfield or Caterham , can't remember which, sell a heavy duty gearbox mount which is well worth fitting even if it involves a bit of fabrication

In which way is the gearstick moving? Are the engine mounts OK? The gearbox mounting does little more than hold the tail of the box up so any side to side movement under accelerating/decellerating would be due to soft engine mounts.

Fitting a new one from Westerham made a huge difference to my car and stopped the gearbox from hitting the chassis under acceleration

If the stick is moving up and down during accelleration/decelleration, then yes, a new gearbox mounting makes sense otherwise, the new gearbox mount will be masking a problem with soft engine mounts. The gearbox mounting is not there to prevent rotating movement.

The engine mounts were brand new LandRover items capable of holding a much heavier engine with more torque than my Xflow lump. Since fitting the gearbox mount the engine has been rebuilt gaining 35BHP and a load more torque and the gearbox hasn't hit the chassis once.
