fiesta zetec cam belt change- help

Hi all,

need some help again, doing cam belt change on shmbo fiesta 1.25 zetec, managed to get bottom pulley off (4 hrs), went to time it up, turning crank bolt as in manual, crank going round, belt and cams not moving???, what have I done wrong and how can I fix, (I have a laser timing pin kit with bar for locking cams and crank).

Thanks
Andy

Remove number one and two spark plug , use a long screw driver or rod down the plug holes ,put the gearbox in top gear, jack the drivers side front wheel ,rotate the wheel forward to turn the engine over carefully while watching the screwdriver or rod . Bring the piston up to approx halfway up the bore then set the cams using the timing bar across the rear of the cams. Rotate the engine forward until no one piston is at TDC then fit the crank locking pin which is found just above the O S drive shaft, you may have to rock the engine around TDC to locate the hole in the crank . This should set the cam timing back to its original position DO NOT use the cam timing bar to lock the cams whilst releasing the cam sprocket bolts, you will break the cams, use a cam sprocket holding tool, easy enough to make . Use these instructions at your own risk In future if changing any timing belt always set the cam timing up before removing any crank or cam bolts

hi,

I have not removed the old belt yet, so I can take this off and set up as you have described, thanks for advise/ set up , I was not aware of the cam timing belt pulley not being keyed, have learnt my lesson, will set up timing before removing bolts etc, is this a new thing on newer cars, used to old transits and Peugeot diesels.

Thanks again

Andy

Lots of modern engine have the valve timing locked by crank or cam pulley locking bolts even engines with chains such as the Duratec , Renault diesels

make sure for gods sake that crank pulley is torqued correctly to what Ford say, otherwise they wind off and the engine lets go
