S2000 gearbox to Ford engine, anyone done this?

Looking for a decent box for my car and will not buy another Tran x box, Quiff and caterham boxes a bit too steep, so is using an S2000 box feasible?

I think the s2000 spins the oposite way to ford engines doesnt it? Seeing as the box is designed to work spinning the other way it may not last long?

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

Beat me to it, they run the other way so the gears will be cut to suit, may be better looking at Mazda boxes or maybe BMW's, older ones with good power ran getrag boxes.

They run the same way it was the Honda b series engines that didn't. I've seen it done the other way s2000 engine to Ford type 9.

Agree s2000 and k20 turn the same way as ford, older b series go the other way.

This might be of interest in terms of gearboxes.

When you are comparing these boxes with a bgh or similar long first hd box make sure you factor in the costs of bespoke adaptors or bellhouses and all of the work to convert form hydraulic to cable or the other way and the possibility of new mounts and new tunnel holes/top plus maybe a new or modified Prop shaft. The box may be cheap but the rest of the work may not.

If you want an S2000 gearbox cheap buy an RX8 6 speed box.
Same gearbox made by Aisin Toyota. I believe the code is AZ6.

Or buy a Lexus IS200 gearbox. Its the same Aisin AZ6 unit as fitted to the RX8, MX5 and S15.
Its a strong box with a slick change. ( Not 300+ bhp strong though.)
I've just fitted one to my 3SGE engined Spyder Silverstone. I had to mod the bellhousing bolt pattern and cut 10mm off the front face.
Then move the gearlever forward five inches and shorten it. All straightforward stuff.
If the input shaft on the Ford box sticks proud of the front face then you'll have to do similar mods. The input shaft on the IS200 box sits 10mm below flush.
And they're cheap. I've just bought a spare one for £25. The one in the car cost me the princely sum of £1.20 off ebay.
The RX8 version has the lever a bit further forward than the others but will cost more.
The different versions have slightly different ratios, mostly with quite a long first gear. The rest are closely spaced though.
You will need a suitable spigot bearing to match the input shaft nose diameter and a suitable clutch plate to match up to the Ford flywheel.
All do-able.
You should be able to use the IS200 starter too.
Here is some gear ratio info etc.
The pics show the Lexus Altezza RS200 variant of the AZ6. The is200 puts the starter motor on the opposite side.
IS200 front face to gearlever 760mm. ( But you can shorten it quite easily.)

S15 6 spd 3.626 2.200 1.541 1.213 1.000 0.767
RX8 6 spd 3.760 2.269 1.645 1.187 1.000 0.843
MX5 6-spd 99- 3.760 2.269 1.645 1.257 1.000 0.843
IS200 6 spd 3.874 2.175 1.484 1.223 1.000 0.869

Does anyone know if the five speed MX5 box will fit onto the Ford Zetec. I may be wrong, but is the MX box a direct fit to the Ford bolt pattern?

The MK3 MX5 gearbox fits Duratec engines. So no to the Zetec.

The MK2 MX5 6spd is the same gearbox as the S2000, RX8, etc with different bellhousings and ratios.

The MK1, Mk2 5spd gearbox is different again.

MX5 Turbo ers recon 250bhp is enough for the 5 speed and 350 the absolute max for the 6 speed.

Confused? I know I am!
