New motor starter problems

Ok, here is my problem. Ford crossflow 1600cc replacing a 1300cc crossflow. Type 3 transmission replacing a type 2 transmission. The next to last item on my motor replacement list is the starter. Forgive me if I don’t use the right terms. The starter motor is the proper starter for a Ford of my type (all ready confirmed as long as they put the right part number on the right starter). The bellhousing is suppose to be from a Ford and fits perfectly. The flywheel is off my old 1300cc xflow motor ( flywheel worked on the Formula Ford dyno when they tested the motor) with the teeth on the clutch side. The starter motor from my old 1300cc xflow is the BMC type will not fit as it used a completely different way of mounting and engaging (This starter was mounted on the left side of the 1300cc motor). The new starter is mounted on the right side of the 1600cc motor. The starter pinion gear (pushing toward the flywheel) of the new starter is not engaging the flywheel. The flywheel tooth to bellhousing measures 32mm. From the flange of the starter to the engaged teeth of the starter pinion gear is about 30mm and about 15mm when it is not in the engaged position. So clearly the starter pinion is not going out enough so the nose of the starter in not long enough. Has anyone had a similar problem? I talked to a race car builder and the news is not good. The 1300cc xflow used the BMC style starter that had an extended pinion shaft and PULLED the pinion gear into the flywheel. The teeth were on the clutch side of the flywheel. There is no way to use that type starter on my car as the bolt pattern is opposite and there is no room in the bellhousing for that long a shaft unless I cut a large hole in it. This is the type of flywheel that the formula Ford guys use that is why the engine builder wanted my old flywheel (I wish he would have realized that it would not work on a street car). The fix???? Buy a $500 geared starter from Pegasus Racing and use my flywheel (assuming it has the right teeth). Take the motor and tranny out. Use another 1600cc flywheel with the teeth on the motor side of the flywheel. Bad news there is the motor will have to be torn apart and have the crank and flywheel rebalanced. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ What do you all use when you swap motors. Thanks in advance, Russ

If I am reading this correctly and it's a lack on engagement? Then is it possible to machine the mounting face on the starter back so that it sits in further?

Otherwise I would look for second hand ones...

It sounds like you need a pre engaged starter motor rather than an inertia type (BMC) Fords did use the inertia type in the UK for the Escort using the XFlow lump but I'm not sure about the bell housing you are using IIRC all of the UK XFlow lumps had the starter under the exhaust manifold due to the clutch operating arm being on the inlet side. The flywheel for use with the pre engaged starter uses a different number of teeth to the inertia starter , BurtonPowers website shows details for ring gears . Don't know if Ford USA sold the Fiesta , it might be worth checking out a Fiesta starter? If the bell housing is at fault can you get hold of the RS2000 type which has provision for the starter to fit both sides ?
