Why, just WHY!?

Doing a bit of tinkering in the garage, as you do. Fix yet another minor oil leak(no leaks now, yay!) go to start the car to move it and it makes a horrible noise. Weird, try again. Did the same again. What now!?

Just got it ready for the rolling road on Tuesday and now this. Where the hell am I going to get a new ancient starter motor between now and the weekend? One step forward and two back. If you are localish to Hereford and have an inertia starter for a Xflow then please, I am all ears!

You don't need a complete starter, just the bendix.

10 Tooth Starter Motor Bendix Drive Gear Pinion to Fit Lucas M35G M35J Inertia

Or if you've got an old school motor factors nearby they might just have an old stock one hanging about.

I did wonder but after having a quick look I couldn't really see how to replace it. I'm now googling high torque replacements.

Any idea how to strip it down? If it's as simple as that I will ring them and beg them to send one to me quickly!

Now you're testing my memory. Must be 20 years since I did one, though it was a weekly job back then.

You have to compress the spring/washer on the end and then under the washer is a retaining ring. flick that out and release the compression and then the bendix comes off. Replacement is just a reversal. Compressing the spring will be the aukward bit. We had probably still have somewhere) a clamp too like a big/long G-clamp that made it easy.

THIS PAGE might help.

That is superb, thanks a lot!

With the state of tune of my engine, the standard starter has always struggled a bit. Maybe now is the time to do something about it. It just so happens a local company has a powerlite high torque starter in stock. I could do without throwing £200 at it though!

Thanks again for the info, it's extremely helpful!

Shame you're so far away as I've probably got a bendix somewhere and could probably put my hand on the clamp with a bit of head scratching.

If you do order one be sure to get the right number of teeth. Think they were either 10 or 11 teeth but don't quote me on that.

Thanks very much. It is a shame!

It's just a pain as if it were a zetec etc I could have a recon starter for £50 tomorrow. This old stuff is starting to do my head in now.

I'll ring Holden tomorrow and make sure this go fast starter is the right one. I think putting a bad boy one on now is the right way to go, even if my pocket thinks differently.

Thanks again for the help!

I did one a few years ago and used my lathe to compress the spring I put the starter in the three-jaw and used the tail stock to squish the spring. I've also abused a pillar drill in a similar was to fit valve springs and coilover springs!!

I admire your ingenuity!

Just to update, I have ordered a high torque starter. As nothing is simple in my world, off the shelf ones won't fit my application apparently so they are making a hitachi one to suit. Should be with me either tomorrow or Friday. Cutting it fine a bit, I just hope inter link are on the ball!

Final update(touch wood).

Starter arrived today. Very nice it is too! Fitted, sorted the new wiring and it's all good to go again.

If anyone is after bits such as this, Cambridge Motorsport were brilliant. Extremely knowledgable and very helpful. Built to my specs and at my door inside 3 days is great. Probably not the cheapest out there but to me, good service is worth the little extra.

Now let's see if it blows up on the rollers!
