accu spark on pinto
Hi chaps
Just wondered if anyone has used the accu spark ignition system on there pinto engine?
The set up instructions are a bit vague

Is that cause they where printed in the 70's??

Yes, got it on Pinto and dolomite sprint, simple to fit, retime and forgot it is there. Good bit of cheap kit. Can I help??

Fitted one about a month ago, no problem. Easy to fit and working well. I got lucky as they were doing a deal and got a set of HT leads free.

when I had my pinto I got the full accuspark deal dizzy leads and plugs and the plugs were gold and very shiny as far as I can remember there was
only two wires live and earth

Thanks for all the responses chaps. My issue is do I wire it up to the original ford edis module? As on the paper work that came with it, it said wire
it straight to the ignition which I didn't think was right?!

I got the full kit as well. So new dizzy, ht leads, spark plugs and ignition coil

calling the system "modern ignition" always makes me laugh - I guess it still
counted as modern in 1985

Are you sure you've got an EDIS ?
The EDIS modules are a distributorless system form the later engines - if you've got one of these the only reason to keep the distributor is for
the oil pump drive....
EDIS4 modules (4 = 4cyl) take a crank speed/position signal from a toothed trigger wheel, then use this to fire the coil pack directly (the coil pack
has 4 outputs)
the EDIS modifies the timing of the spark based on instructions from the main ECU (which may be replaced by aftermarket ECU's like megajolt,
megasquirt etc...) but will run at a fixed 10° timing without an ECU input, this is 'limp home' feature.
The pinto on the other hand came with 3 types of ignition as standard - all are distributor based.
1 - old fashioned dizzy with points and mechanical & vac advance - this is what the accuspark kit (and all similar brands) are designed to
replace / upgrade
2 - electronic dizzy without points but still with mechanical & vac advance fitted on the later carb'd engines (sierra's mostly) -
these have an external amplifier module and are effectively the same as an acuuspark setup - they look like this:

3 - the fully electronic dizzy from EFI cars - this has no advance mechanism at all, inside there is basically just a HALL effect sensor and the
rotor arm - the cars main ECU does everything else - these can't run without the ECU to control them

in that case it reall should be as simple as connecting up the wires as per there instructions....
what you've bought should be a stand alone system that completely replaces whatever you had before
The big questions from my point of view is did you need to buy it at all and will it do the job you wanted it to ?
(so what do you expect from it and how tuned is the engine ? )

Mine I did not wire to the Ford black box thingy it just goes to switched live

The issue is I bought my kit second hand and it came with a ignition module but I'm not sure it what came with the original car and what
additional items have been bought previously.
All I'm looking and wanting from the accu spark kit is a semi decent new ignition system. As long as I can just plug it into the ignition and
away we go then I'm happy.
