Engine suggestion please?
Hi,
In another attempt to solve my woes......
I currently have a Zetec se in my midi and want to simplify my life and find something without an ECU!!!!
What older non-ecu engines (FWD) have intake and exhausts on the same side as a Zetec I.e. opposite from the usual Ford suspects?
Appreciate any suggestions!

Are your ECU issues around reliability?

If you want to bolt something to your existing gearbox then you are out of luck - Zetec SE has a different bolt pattern to the older engines (Zetec
E/R, Pinto, Xflow, CVH). Also if you want exhaust etc. on the same size then the Pinto is the only one and that is a real step backwards. If you are
looking for fully clockwork then your only real choice will be a cvh or Xflow on carbs and distributor from a Fiesta or possibly an early mk3
escort.
Assuming the car is already registered then why not look at putting a Chester Sports cars bike carb/nodiz kit on your existing engine. For a stock 1.6
SE this is reputed to put out 140hp. I had a similar kit on a 2.0l Zertec silvertop and all I did was bolt on the manifold/carbs, change the fuel pump
and regulator (needs to be down to 2psi, facet posiflo and filter king), connect up the five wires (iirc) turn the key and off I went.
Worth a call to them to see what they can do. I think it sells for around £1k which is probably what an engine swap to anything else will cost taking
into account getting drive shafts modified, new exhaust manifold, new engine mounts buy the engine etc..
As has already been said, what are the issues, maybe someone on here can help ?

Thanks for the suggestions.
The car is (unfortunately) not finished. The problems stem from me taking so long to build the car, labels falling off the loom etc..
I had lots of help a while ago and got it running. I labelled all the critical wires, removed all unnecessary wires from the loom etc. but now I
seem to be back at square 1. I fix one issue, engine turns but no fuel pump. Get the fuel pump working, start relay no longer clicks. Rest finger on
start relay, it works. It must be bad earth somewhere but in the end, there is still no spark and I strongly suspect the PATS.......
If I get a FWD car of similar dimensions to the ford, I can (probably) modify the car to fit the standard drive shafts that came with it, who knows.
Was really just trying to see if there was a solution I hadn't thought of - not looking for huge power as my Zetec SE is only a 1.25 - which
also reduces my other options....

Do you have a friendly auto-electrician? I really struggled to find a fault, and called him out. 2 minutes later, he's spotted it and fixed it.
I felt like a chump at the time, but really what I got for my £20 was his experience.

Remember if you are going to IVA the car then if you are running distributor and carbs the engine will need to be older than 1995 otherwise emission
will not be possible to pass. You can probably pick up a fiesta with a 1.25 running for a couple of hundred £ or a focus with the 1.6 if you want to
start with a running engine. Get the oldest poverty spec car, less to delete.
The Vauxhall redtops (XE) have a dizzy IIRC and can be run on carbs but that is a big hike in size/power from the very small zetec SE and getting
harder to find with the gearbox (most probably already converted to RWD).

If you suspect the PATS do you have an LED fitted to diagnose what is happening when you turn the key? If its the same pattern as the Zetec E fitted
to Mondeo etc then you should have a flashing LED when powered off, turn the key, light flashes and then stays steady waiting for you to turn the key
and goes off when engine running. Do you have the OBD2 plug fitted to the loom this can be used to help diagnose too.
Look here for PATS codes

I stil have the original clock wired in which has the PATS LED. It was wasas help and advice that got me started the first time I had issues.
Guess finding a local auto electrician is a good start.
Any 'outside the box' engine suggestions? Saw a carb'd micra engine on eBay.......

^^ as above using a pre-Aug 95 engine for the IVA does let you use a simple carb'd setup for the emission test
if you then swap it out for a newer / EFI engine after the car is registered you'll still only have to pass the old pre-CAT emissions for your
MOT
cars that get given Q plates get away with even more at the MOT, but engine age is the only way around the IVA emissions tests (and if you can't
prove the age you have to pass the current standards )
The 1.3 Endura engines were fitted to the same mk4,5,6 fiesta's as the 1.25 zetec SE (aka the Sigma engine), so driveshafts etc are likely to be
very similar if not the same.
of course these Endura engines will also be too new for the pre-CAT emission tests, but its predecessor the HCS engine is very similar - these are the
ones found in the mk3 1.1 and 1.3 fiesta's
However these are X-Flow derived so exhaust is on the opposite side from your sigma engine...
also an HCS engine with a carb should cost next nothing

Sorry to hear of you difficulties. I have a Zetec SE ( 1.7 puma ) as have many on here. At first I thought I would have to use an aftermarket ECU but
with the help of Bigwasa, blackfingernail and others on here I got it to run on the standard ECU ( saving £1k). I would recommend you stick with the
Zetec SE ( Sigma ).Far better than a Pinto. Look for threads about 'Zetec with OEM ECU' by the aforementoined. They can guide you through
it. There is a wealth of info on this site and blackfingernail may not be far from you. Good luck.
